When Cartoon Worlds Collide: A Twistedly Absurd Mashup of Politics and Comics

Central Library, Meeting Room 302
10/02/2017
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Come share an evening of absurdity with two nationally-syndicated cartoonists: Leigh Rubin, the creator of the comic strip “Rubes,” and Wisconsin State Journal editorial cartoonist Phil Hands. This odd couple will riff on each others’ cartoons and show how the twisted minds of two very different cartoonists work. Rubin’s work focuses primarily on the hilarity of animal and human nature, while Hands draws stranger creatures: politicians. So, if you’ve ever wanted to meet a professional smart aleck or a full-time doodler, don’t miss this event. Door prizes will be raffled to unlucky winners.

Ecological Storytelling: Imaginative Experiments for All Ages

Bubbler, Central Library
10/07/2017
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join visiting artists Christa Donner and Andrew Yang for this hands-on workshop exploring unexpected connections between the things in your everyday life and our world - natural, artificial, cultural, and imaginable. During this two-hour workshop participants of all ages will work together to explore the ecological webs that connect through our lives. Through open-ended prompts, participants will collaboratively devise stories from a blend of drawing, collage, and game playing to spark inter-generational conversation and ecological thinking. In this time of environmental complexity, we need new ways of telling stories that connect us to each other and to our futures, pasts, and present environment. This playful approach to ecological narratives involves the complex, non-linear, and indeterminate. Let’s make art together to invent new relations and new ways of learning!

Wisconsin Book Festival presents Nathan Englander

Central Library, Meeting Room 301
10/09/2017
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Nathan Englander reads from his new novel DINNER AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, a political thriller that unfolds in the highly charged territory of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and pivots on the complex relationship between a secret prisoner and his guard. A prisoner in a secret cell. The guard who has watched over him a dozen years. An American waitress in Paris. A young Palestinian man in Berlin who strikes up an odd friendship with a wealthy Canadian businessman. And The General, Israel's most controversial leader, who lies dying in a hospital, the only man who knows of the prisoner's existence. From these vastly different lives Nathan Englander has woven a powerful, intensely suspenseful portrait of a nation riven by insoluble conflict, even as the lives of its citizens become fatefully and inextricably entwined--a political thriller of the highest order that interrogates the anguished, violent division between Israelis and Palestinians, and dramatizes the immense moral ambiguities haunting both sides. Who is right, who is wrong--who is the guard, who is truly the prisoner?

UW Oral History Program: Dow Riot

Central Library
10/18/2017
10:00 am - 8:00 pm

October 2017 will mark 50 years since the Dow Demonstrations demonstrations took place on campus, transforming the lives of many students, staff, and community members. Beginning on October 18 and into October 19, 1967, hundreds of students protesting Dow Chemicals blocked access to the Commerce Building on campus, with Madison Police removing participants with force. The events are considered to have transformed UW-Madison into one of the leaders in the anti-war movement of the time.

Now, 50 years later, the UW-Madison Libraries and Madison Public Library are collaborating through a joint public history project to collect stories are looking to hear from those who lived through the Dow demonstrations and to share what the impacts it made on their lives, through a joint public history project.

“The events of October 1967 left a lasting impact of those in this community, long after they left the UW-Madison campus,” said Troy Reeves, head of the oral history program with the University Archives. “Their experiences helped shape the anti-war culture throughout the remainder of the 1960s and into the next decade. Ensuring that their stories are captured for the future is not only about preserving history, but helping to understand the impact is it has on our future.”

To gather stories from those who experienced the demonstrations, the UW-Madison Libraries are collaborating with the Madison Public Library to set up recording booths to at the MPL Central Library, October 18-19, for community members to share their memories.
