6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

A journalist recounts her wartime coverage in Afghanistan.(2016|112mins)
From IMDb entry - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3553442/

"In the savvy comedy “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot,” a New York-based news producer leaves behind a cushy yet frustratingly predictable job for the madness of war-torn Afghanistan, becoming something of an adrenaline junkie in the process. That the producer in this case happens to be a woman doesn’t significantly alter this storyline’s trajectory, and that’s one of the film’s smart, satisfying strategies."
-Alonso Duralde, thewrap.com

There is room for 50 guests and seating will be on a first come first serve basis. Doors open at 6:00pm. This film is rated R by the MPAA. Children under 17 must be with an adult. Light refreshments to be provided by the Friends of Pinney Library.

Night Light: Lost & Found

Central Library, Madison Room
08/05/2016
8:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Join us for Night Light August 5th and get lost in three new art exhibitions at Madison's Central Library.

Featuring new work from Brandon Norsted, Kandy Watson, and Mackenzie Reynolds, and introducing the New Bubbler Artist in Residence for August, Danika Brubaker.

The founder of the For the One Who Finds Me Project, Danika is inviting library visitors throughout the month of August to explore and participate in creating "found art" including mini flower arrangements and tiny sculptures while documenting these found moments on social media.

Help her kick off her residency by creating, tagging, and hiding your own random act of kindness in the library or downtown during Night Light!

Or, get lost in memories of objects left behind in Brandon Norsted's new exhibition "Time Again" in the 3rd floor Diane Ballweg Gallery. When fixing up a VW van and making many trips to the junk yard to find parts, he started looking at the cars and seeing people's left lives in them. Examining these spaces stuck in time in his photographs, we have the view from the outside of so many personal objects and stories trapped in time.

Also including new art exhibitions:
"The 70's Projected" A collection of family and its foundations by Kandy Watson in our 2nd floor Gallery

"For What's it Worth" A deeper look into the catastrophe that lies between a memory and a photograph by Mackenzie Reynolds in our 1st floor gallery.

During her residency, Danika will support the creation and documentation of random acts of kindness/art on social media platforms. Visit the Bubbler and conspire to make someone's day a little brighter; leave with the thrill of sharing your artistic creation with a stranger. More magic! More kindness!

Danika Brubaker is an artist who strives to support the unfolding of the powerful social experience of creating, committing, and documenting random acts of kindness through the distribution and tagging of found art. She is the founder of the For the One Who Finds Me, a growing group of individuals of all ages who create, hashtag and hide surprise bouquets of flowers for strangers to discover.

The Bubbler is funded by a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services.

Meet your Makers - Barbara Landes

Meet your Makers - Barbara Landes

Bubbler, Central Library
08/06/2016
10:00 am - 1:00 pm

If you are spending your Saturday out and about, but sure to swing by the Bubbler at Central Library to Meet Your local Makers.

Previous Bubbler Artist in Residence, Barbara's current works are colorful, gestural sculptures of handmade paper that twist, wrap, bind, drape and hang. The works are expressive of various human movements and the emotions that give rise to them. She recently has been making collaborative works with my husband Paul Sullivan. You can see some of these works at the Playhouse gallery at the Overture Center.

Drop in any time from 10am-1pm to see Barb at work, handle some of her paper pieces, and learn about the process. Try your hand at making sheets of paper and add color or imagery with colored pulps and “pulp paints” with to your freshly made sheets.

For the full listing of Summer Meet your makers visit the Bubbler website at madisonbubbler.org/meet-your-maker

Celebration of Sid Boyum: Film, Art, & Stories

Pinney Library
08/11/2016
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

"Sid Boyum was a Madison legend, one of those manic Wisconsin folk artists who just can’t help themselves from churning out fascinating, ambitious works of art. You’ve probably seen his work around town: the Man-Eating Mushroom and Red Dragon along the bike path by the Harmony Bar and Grill, the Polar Bear chair in Elmside Circle Park, the wallowing Hippo in Wirth Court Park. These were all distributed around the Schenk-Atwood-Starkweather-Yahara neighborhood as part of a previous effort to conserve and publicize his art, after Sid’s death in 1991." -friendsofsidboyum.org

Recently discovered, cleaned, and digitized are some short films that Sid filmed and edited. Come to this event to view these films in their first ever public screening, as well as slides of his artwork. Bring your Sid stories to share and enjoy stories from community members.

This event is offered in partnership with Friends of Sid Boyum and the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research. Learn more about Sid Boyum's legacy and the work being done to preserve his home and artwork at friendsofsidboyum.org

Dororo (anime)

Hyakkimaru is a tortured young man who lost 48 parts of his body when his own father offered him up to demons in exchange for power. Traveling the war-torn countryside of Sengoku era Japan, he quests to slay the demons and regain his humanity piece by piece.

On his journey he is accompanied by Dororo, an enigmatic young orphan and sneak-thief who has made it a personal goal to swipe Hyakkimaru's swords.

Together the two will face horrific monsters and the even more horrific ravages of war!

Brought to life by the great Gisaburo Sugii (Night on the Galactic Railroad, Touch) and packed with stories unique to the anime version, including the conclusion of Hyakkimaru and Dororo's story not found in the manga, this is the definitive version of Osamu Tezuka's classic.

Meet your Makers - Hannah Sandvold

Bubbler, Central Library
08/13/2016
10:00 am - 1:00 pm

If you are spending your Saturday out and about, but sure to swing by the Bubbler at Central Library to Meet Your local Makers.

Hannah Sandvold is an illustrator, printmaker, and designer from Madison, WI. For the past several years, she has also worked as an after-school teacher, and has used this experience to fuel a series of comics that highlights the struggle, delight, and randomness that is working with elementary students. Sometimes the littlest moments in life are the most amusing, or most worth remembering, and so sharing her process for documenting these events as well as showing the artistic step-by step for drawing and inking comics is some of what you can expect from this session. Drop in any time from 10am-1pm to meet Hannah, see her work in progress, and create your own illustrations with guidance.

Now 8/24 - The Paradox of Being a Black Police Officer in Today's Society

Pinney Library
08/13/2016
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

RESCHEDULED to Wednesday, 8/24 at 7:00!
Officer Corey Saffold is a law enforcement professional in Madison, and is known in the community for his volunteerism and his work with youth of all ages and demographic backgrounds. In his talk, Corey will discuss his experiences as a Black policeman in the wake of multiple, highly publicized killings of unarmed African-Americans by police officers. Additionally, Officer Saffold will address the paradox of being a Black officer during a time when police are viewed as an enemy and are often not trusted, especially among the African-American community. The shooting and killing of unarmed African-Americans has intensified already strained relations between the community and the police. As such, Officer Saffold will offer his strategy for engaging the community at large around these issues that have also affected him personally. Corey will relay his personal experiences with law enforcement and how these experiences have helped to shape his approach to upholding the law throughout the city. This event is brought to you by the Wisconsin Humanities Council.

Join us for a sewing class at Pinney Library this summer. This class is geared toward the beginner and intermediate sewers, who already have a working familiarity with their own (working!) sewing machine and would like to get back into sewing.

In August we’ll be reviewing some machine basics and constructing decorative, burrito style pillowcases. Great for taking off to school or as a gift for a recent grad who’d love a reminder of home! Please bring your machine and sewing supplies. For each pillow case bring 1 yard of your main fabric and two, ¼ yard pieces for contrasting fabric. Double this amount if you’d like to make a pair of cases. (We’ll have plenty of time to make two cases.)

Please bring:
Your own working sewing machine
Thread
New sewing machine needles
Fabric (see course description)
Scissors
Seam ripper
Bobbins for your machine
Measuring tape
Pins

Library will provide:
Ironing station
Cords for backpacks
Extension cords
Good lighting

Book discussion of The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

Hawthorne Library
08/17/2016
6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel goes to the police. But is she really as unreliable as they say? Soon she is deeply entangled not only in the investigation but in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

Family Movie Friday: INSIDE OUT

Family Movie Friday: INSIDE OUT

Pinney Library
08/19/2016
1:00 pm - 2:45 pm

After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school. (2015|95mins)
IMDB entry - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2096673

"What I love about “Inside Out” is that the stakes couldn’t be smaller (Joy’s quest is basically to snap Riley out of her funk) but feel so weighty and essential. For a film that’s so ultimately (and literally) internal, “Inside Out” fills the screen with fun and wonder, devising the clever and beautiful architecture of the brain, from the theme park of Imagination Land to the trippy Abstract Thinking zone."
-Rob Thomas, madisonmovie.org

This movie is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult to attend this event. Light refreshments to be provided by the Friends of Pinney Library.

Red Violin = Le Violon Rouge (adult feature film)

Red Violin = Le Violon Rouge (adult feature film)

Hawthorne Library
08/19/2016
7:00 pm - 7:45 pm

1998 / France / Historical drama / 131 min. / Rated R
There is a kind of ideal beauty that reduces us all to yearning for perfection. "The Red Violin'' is about that yearning. It traces the story of a violin ("the single most perfect acoustical machine I've ever seen,'' says a restorer) from its maker in 17th century Italy to an auction room in modern Montreal. The violin passes from the rich to the poor, from Italy to Poland to England to China to Canada. It is shot, buried, almost burned and stolen more than once. It produces music so beautiful that it makes you want to cry.

Join us for a wide and wild variety of adult feature films. All films will be shown in original language, with English subtitles as needed. These screenings are for adults and older teens, many have R or R-equivalent ratings. Refreshments will be served:) The films will start at 7:00 pm. Hawthorne Library closes at 8:00 pm -- if you need to check items out, you will need to do so before 8:00 pm. The program room and restrooms will remain open until the conclusion of the film.

Goodman South Madison Library
08/20/2016
1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

The beautiful, stunningly ambitious, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Are you passionate about a subject and wondering how to get other people involved? Are you curious about website design, apps and coding? I do this by giving them missions which then they get points from when the missions are completed. Come to the Sequoya Library on Monday, August 22, 2016, at 2:00pm, for his presentation for kids (and interested parents too). http://www.infiniteturtle.org/

The Paradox of Being a Black Police Officer in Today's Society

The Paradox of Being a Black Police Officer in Today's Society

Pinney Library
08/24/2016
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Doors open at 6:30.

The Salad Days Book Club - A Man Called Ove

Hawthorne Library
08/25/2016
6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for Hawthorne Library's monthly book club, The Salad Days! This group is tailored to (but by no means limited to!) readers of the millennial generation looking to explore books and popular culture. We meet the fourth Thursday of each month at The Daisy Cafe and Cupcakery (2827 Atwood Ave). You can pick up books at the Hawthorne Library.

"A grumpy yet loveable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon, the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him the bitter neighbor from hell, but must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?

Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations." (Goodreads, 2016).

The King's close advisor implemented a large-scale witch-hunt. The tragic victims of this hunt were not witches, however, but Makai Knights and Makai Priests. One Makai Priestess gave birth to a child while being burned at the stake. That child carried the bloodlines of the Golden Knight. Although he was saved by his father, a Makai Knight himself, the newborn, León Luís, suffered greatly from the unjust death of his mother. And so he vowed to learn the ways of a Makai Knight from his father, Germán Luís, and use his training to seek revenge. During his battles against the demons known as "Horrors," León must gradually approach reality and accept the truth.

Meanwhile, the powerful former adviser to the King, Mendoza, banished Prince Alfonso and his mother while the king was bedridden. Eager to reclaim his kingdom and save his people, Alfonso embarks on a quest to find the legendary Knight - but destiny holds a twist of fate in store for him.

Together, León and Alfonso begin long and difficult journey filled with many hardships.

Cheeseheads

For the past few months, director John Mitchell has been making the rounds across the state, donating copies of his documentary on Wisconsin's weird and underseen corners of life to public schools and library systems.

Mitchell's film CHEESEHEADS avoids the outsized stigmas of beer-swilling tailgaters and foamhat faithful. It expands a personal question into a universal one, taking Mitchell on an extensive journey -- a journey that racked up hundreds of miles across dozens of cities and over 5 years of its director's life.

LakeFrontRow's David Klein will present the film along with John Mitchell and a couple guests from UW-Madison: lexicographer Luanne von Schneidemesser and Joseph Salmons from the Department of German.

For more info about the film, go to iamacheesehead.com
