08/02/2017
4:30 pm - 7:00 pm

This event is held at Haen Family Park (7702 Tree Lane)

Enjoy play-centered, child led activities in the park each week. The library will provide special play equipment to spark your children's imagination. At the end of each event, kids will create a Play Story, drawing and/or writing about their play for that day. Wear messy clothes, bring a water bottle, (optional) bring a picnic dinner or purchase a meal from the "Let's Eat Out" local food carts, and make an evening of it! This event is created in partnership with the Madison Parks Division and funded in part by a grant from the Madison Public Library Foundation.

“The physical exercise and emotional stretching that children enjoy in unorganized play is more varied and less time-bound than is found in organized sports. Playtime—especially unstructured, imaginative, exploratory play—is increasingly recognized as an essential component of wholesome child development.”

"Chaos lurks in every corner of this giddily off-kilter foray into romantic comedy by Paul Thomas Anderson. Codecinella Tech Talk: How a Website Works

Central Library, Meeting Room 301
08/03/2017
6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Join web developer Shobha CK for a discussion about how a website really works during the next Codecinella tech talk.

Everyone is familiar with what a website is but very few know what makes a website and how it works. The talk is about what goes behind the scenes when a website is accessed.

This talk covers following points:

1. Overview of what features/components that web relies on to access a website.
2. Client-server model that a website follows.
3. Some of the major protocols used in the web.
4. Overview of Web servers.

Please RSVP for this event at https://www.meetup.com/codecinella-madison/events/241237741/

About Codecinella:

We are local women software developers, students and professionals, looking to strengthen our community, and to encourage more women to become involved in the technology field. Most of us really like solving puzzles, writing code, and learning new technical skills. Some of us are geeks. Some of us are very new to the field, and think we'll like it, but need a safe learning environment in which to figure out how fun it is and how well we fit. All are welcome. We focus on technical talks and hands-on technical workshops, as well as low-key hack sessions. If you want to present a technical talk, we'll help you do that, too.

Codecinella operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization through fiscal sponsorship by the Center for Community Stewardship (C4CS), our fiscal agent.

First Friday Flicks - NORMAN

First Friday Flicks - NORMAN

Pinney Library
08/04/2017
6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

"Norman Oppenheimer is a small time operator who befriends a young politician at a low point in his life. Three years later, when the politician becomes an influential world leader, Norman's life dramatically changes for better and worse."
IMDb listing: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4191702/

"It’s not what you know but who that really counts. Norman Oppenheimer, the indelible title character of Joseph Cedar’s new movie, lives by these words. Played by Richard Gere, under a heavy overcoat he never seems to remove, Norman is a nobody hell-bent on becoming a somebody, mostly by talking the ear off of everybody. Immune to embarrassment, he hovers around the outer edges of New York’s most affluent Jewish circles, working angles and arranging meetings through sheer overbearing persistence."
-A.A. Dowd, theavclub.com

Seating is first come, first served with space for 50 attendees. Doors open 1/2 hour before the film start time. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Pinney Library. This film is rated R by the MPAA. Children under 17 must be accompanied by an adult.

First Friday: Coloring For Grownups

First Friday: Coloring For Grownups

Alicia Ashman Library
08/04/2017
6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

What's this coloring-for-grownups craze all about? Come and find out! Coloring for adults can be a stress-reliever, and a low-pressure way to get your creative juices flowing.

The instructions?

1. Break out your crayons, colored pencils, or markers. (We'll provide these, but feel free to bring your own if you have favorites).

2. Turn off your phone, tablet, computer, whatever.

3. Start coloring. (We'll have a variety of coloring sheets to choose from).

4. If you notice at any point that you are forgetting your worries, daydreaming freely, or feeling more creative, curious, excitable, delighted, relaxed, or any combination thereof, take a deep breath and enjoy it. Remind yourself that coloring, like dancing or falling in love, does not have a point. It is the point.

5. When you don't feel like it anymore, stop.

This is not a class--there is no formal instruction. No registration required--just drop in, bring your creativity, and color yourself relaxed.

Occasionally a special craft project may be added.

08/07/2017
4:30 pm - 7:00 pm

This event is held at Reindahl Park (1818 Portage Road)

Enjoy play-centered, child led activities in the park each week. The library will provide special play equipment to spark your child's imagination.

08/09/2017

Container Gardening Workshop

Container Gardening Workshop

Goodman South Madison Library
08/09/2017
6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Container gardening has become a hot topic in recent years as more of us are living in condos and apartments and would still like to garden. Gardening with containers also allows us to garden as we age, with less bending and kneeling. To be a successful container gardener, you need to know not only about the plants that grow in containers but also how growing in containers affect plants.

A certified Master Gardener Volunteer from Dane Co. UW-Extension will talk about the advantages and disadvantages of different container types, container soils and their characteristics, watering and fertilizing schedules, plants that are well suited for containers and container design.

Speakers are graduates of the Dane County UW-Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program which trains community volunteers in a broad range of horticultural subjects so they can bring this knowledge to the public.

08/14/2017
4:30 pm - 7:00 pm

This event is held at Reindahl Park (1818 Portage Road)

Enjoy play-centered, child led activities in the park each week. The library will provide special play equipment to spark your child's imagination.

A Wild Rumpus: An Anji Play Experience at Haen Family Park

Central Library, Alicia Ashman Library, Goodman South Madison Library, Hawthorne Library, Lakeview Library, Meadowridge Library, Monroe Street Library, Pinney Library, Sequoya Library, Readmobile
08/16/2017

Book Discussion of Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

Book Discussion of Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

Hawthorne Library
08/16/2017
6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

“Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet.” So begins this exquisite novel about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee, and her parents are determined that she will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue. But when Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together is destroyed, tumbling them into chaos. A profoundly moving story of family, secrets, and longing, Everything I Never Told You is both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive family portrait, uncovering the ways in which mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and husbands and wives struggle, all their lives, to understand one another.

by Karen Fowler. In this exploration of a family and its fractures, Fowler purposely withholds key information for the first 70 pages. When it is revealed exactly who was in this family when the children were growing up, the narrative is able to impressively expand in new directions. Social Good Summit

Central Library
08/17/2017
9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Madison Public Library is pleased to partner with the Social Good Summit/Forward Festival to host the 3rd annual Social Good Summit.

The 3rd annual Social Good Summit focus is not on profits, but social change. Madison's innovative community is poised to move the needle on social good acceleration — changing the way business and work will touch our lives.

Every week, accelerators launch hundreds of business initiatives into fruitful realities. But these opportunities are scarce for those who want to create meaningful work, public good, community well-being, and sustainable economies.

It’s time to accelerate good— individuals, ideas, projects and businesses that add value to our communities. It’s time for an accelerator model that lends its support to projects focused on basic human needs, and creating vibrant and thriving communities.

The Salad Days Book Club - Piecing Me Together by Renee Wastson

Hawthorne Library
08/24/2017
6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for Hawthorne Library's monthly book club, The Salad Days! This group is tailored to (but by no means limited to!) readers of the millennial generation looking to explore books and popular culture. We meet the fourth Thursday of each month at The Daisy Cafe and Cupcakery (2827 Atwood Ave). You can pick up books at Hawthorne Library.

"Jade believes she must get out of her neighborhood if she’s ever going to succeed. Her mother says she has to take every opportunity. She has. She accepted a scholarship to a mostly-white private school and even Saturday morning test prep opportunities. But some opportunities feel more demeaning than helpful. Like an invitation to join Women to Women, a mentorship program for “at-risk” girls. Except really, it’s for black girls. From “bad” neighborhoods.

But Jade doesn’t need support. And just because her mentor is black doesn’t mean she understands Jade. And maybe there are some things Jade could show these successful women about the real world and finding ways to make a real difference.

Friendships, race, privilege, identity—this compelling and thoughtful story explores the issues young women face." (Goodreads, 2017.)
