In August and September of 2017, Madison Senior Center and Madison Public Library teamed up with local photographer and Bubbler Artist in Residence Jennifer Bastian and local author Pam Phillips Olson to capture pictures and stories of multigenerational relationships. Families, friends, co-workers, and neighbors participated with only one rule: at least one person in the photo had to be 55 years of age or older.
The photos and accompanying stories that came out of these sessions will be on display for the month of December at both locations. Refreshments will be provided.

December Night Light

December Night Light

Central Library, Madison Room
12/01/2017
6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

All are welcome for an evening of interactive art!

Featured on the 3rd floor in the Diane Endres Ballweg Art Gallery, Family is a Form: Made & Remade - a collaboration between artist-in-residence, Kim Charles Kay and families from the Post Adoption Resource Center (PARC).

Using direct drawing materials, participants created family pictures for current and imagined experiences. Come participate by adding your own take on making and remaking family.

2nd floor: Curious by Lindsay Marx: Marx's paintings look at curiosity and daydreaming through a child's world. They also tap into how adults relate to their own curiosities.

1st floor: Sone una Milpa featuring artists J. Leigh Garcia and Maria Amalia: Soñe una Milpa (I dreamed of a corn field) is a collaborative art project that acknowledges and celebrates the important, though often hidden experience of Latina immigrant women.

1st Floor Installation: Who Matters?: An Intergenerational Photo and Story Project Exhibition Opening

First Friday Flicks - KEDI

First Friday Flicks - KEDI

Pinney Library
12/01/2017
6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

A profile of an ancient city and its unique people, seen through the eyes of the most mysterious and beloved animal humans have ever known, the Cat.(2017|79mins|Turkey)
IMDb entry: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4420704/

"Whatever the city’s official attitude toward its many felines, Istanbulites’ dedication and love appear unflagging. Kedi eloquently taps into the mutual attraction between the cats and their people, as well as the animals’ complexity and resilience. The simplistic conventional 'wisdom' about cats, always uttered by people who don’t know them, is that they’re aloof. Ceyda Torun’s film is a vibrant illustration of just how attuned they are to people, how interested and discerning. If her collection of feline portraits has an emotional/philosophical throughline, it’s the idea that, for we humans, interacting only with people isn’t enough, as one man sums it up."
Sheri Linden - The Hollywood Reporter

Seating is first come, first served with space for 50 attendees. Doors open 1/2 hour before the film start time. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Pinney Library. This film is unrated. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

The truth of Nanaki Village has yet to be discovered.

The Hawthorne Anime Club was created to give people a place to gather, watch, and talk about Japanese animation. Book Discussion of UW-Madison's 2017 Go Big Read: Hillbilly Elegy

Meeting Room 115, Goodman South Madison Library
12/05/2017
6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Join in the discussion of UW-Madison’s 2017 Go Big Read Book, “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis” by J.D. Vance.

This New York Times bestseller is personal reflection on upward mobility in America seen through the lens of a white, working-class family in the Midwest. Author J.D. Vance grew up in the Rust Belt city of Middletown, Ohio, and the Appalachian town of Jackson, Kentucky. He enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school and served in Iraq, then went on to graduate from Ohio State University and Yale Law School. He has since become a principal at a leading Silicon Valley investment firm and a contributing writer to the National Review. Through his memoir, he shares experiences from his difficult childhood and how they have shaped his life. His story has resonated with many people and has sparked discussion about social, economic, and political issues nation-wide - and was chosen as the 2017 Go Big Read title to keep the conversation going. Visit http://www.madisonpubliclibrary.org/go-big-read to find more information, including other discussion dates, related events, and suggestions for further reading.

Special note: Programming activities are not appropriate for younger elementary school kids.

Kids Code Madison is a club, not a class, so you can come any week, anytime! New programmers will be given some direction with tutorials and help from volunteers, and experienced programmers can work on ongoing projects, start something new, help a friend, or practice the “sushi” (mini, bit sized) skill of the day.

Aiman is a 28-year-old Malay correctional officer who is recently transferred to the territory's top prison. He lives with his older sister Suhaila in a modest housing estate. At his new workplace, Aiman begins to take an interest in a 65-year-old sergeant named Rahim. Soon, it is revealed that the charismatic Rahim is actually the long-serving chief executioner of the prison. Rahim also takes notice of the principled and diligent Aiman. When Rahim's assistant suddenly quits, he asks Aiman to become his apprentice. Aiman tells Suhaila of his new job position, but Suhaila becomes upset, as their father was actually executed by Rahim. Aiman knew this all along. Can Aiman overcome his conscience and a haunted past to possibly take over as the next chief executioner? Directed by Boo Jungeng; Starring: Firdaus Rahman, Wan Hanafi Su, Mastura Ahmad.

Join us at the Alicia Ashman Public Library on the second Friday of the month for thought provoking international films from the Film Movement Series.

From director Makoto Shinkai, comes a beautiful masterpiece about time, the thread of fate, and the hearts of two young souls. The day the stars fell, two lives changed forever. High schoolers Mitsusha and Taki are complete strangers living separate lives. But one night, they suddenly switch places. They build a connection by leaving notes and messages but long for a chance to finally meet. Is the string of fate between Mitsusha and Taki strong enough to bring them together, or will forces outside their control leave them forever separated?

Book Discussion of Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult

Book Discussion of Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult

Hawthorne Library
12/20/2017
6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Ruth Jefferson is a labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital with more than twenty years’ experience. During her shift, Ruth begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be told a few minutes later that she’s been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don’t want Ruth, who is African American, to touch their child. The hospital complies with their request, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders or does she intervene?

With incredible empathy, intelligence, and candor, Jodi Picoult tackles race, privilege, prejudice, justice, and compassion—and doesn’t offer easy answers. Small Great Things is a remarkable achievement from a writer at the top of her game.

~American Gods by Neil Gaiman~

Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life.

But just days before his release, Laura and Shadow's best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A trickster and a rogue, Wednesday seems to know more about Shadow than Shadow does himself.
