Triathlon for Everyone

Central Library, Meeting Room 301
05/02/2017
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

The hardest line to cross in any race is the start line, not the finish line. Triathlons really can be for anyone, no matter your age or shape. Learn about the training/fitness required, distance variations, equipment needed (and not needed), local resources, monetary and time factors, and a brief history of triathlon as a sport - it really is a relatively new sport. After this workshop, you should have the needed information to decide if triathlon could become a part of your active lifestyle. About the instructor: Philip Wisely is an experienced educator and triathlete who is enthusiastic about encouraging others to experience the joys and challenges of this wonderful sport. Philip completed his first triathlon at age 48 and has completed six Ironman Triathlons since age 59 - and is currently training for another.

Body Awareness and Creativity

Body Awareness and Creativity

Bubbler, Central Library
05/03/2017
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

How might your creativity flourish in new and perhaps surprising ways if you become more aware of your internal environment? As we feel and attend to sensations within our bodies, we strengthen the interoceptive pathways to our brains. This process of interoception can help us become more aware of our emotions, our sense of ourselves and relationships in the world, and it can forge deeper connections with our own creativity.

In this workshop, we will learn a bit about interoception and how it works, explore gentle interoceptive yoga and movement as ways to awaken body awareness, then invite that awareness into creative exploration through optional prompts for collage, drawing, and creative writing.

Please bring: a yoga mat and art supplies. Some art supplies will be provided, and extra mats may be available. Please call 266-6350 if you would like to borrow a mat.

Come ready to participate! For people 16 and older, no experience necessary.

Clare Norelle is a bilingual yoga teacher and trauma sensitive yoga facilitator who writes songs, tells stories, and explores visual art. She is especially drawn to supporting people as they deepen their sense of connection with their own bodies and lives, and with other life on earth. You can learn more about her work at www.clarenorelle.com

Co-sponsored by the Madison Area Wellness Collective. Learn more at http://www.madisonwellnesscollective.org/

Mixing elements of film noir with sly insider comedy, The Player, based on a novel by Michael Tolkin, functions as both a nifty stylish murder story and a commentary on its own making, and it is stocked with a heroic supporting cast and a lineup of star cameos that make for an astonishing Hollywood who’s who" (Criterion).

Night Light: Gallery Night & Listening in the Dark

Night Light: Gallery Night & Listening in the Dark

Bubbler, Central Library
05/05/2017
6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Joining Madison Museum of Contemporary Art and the Madison art community, we're excited to once again participate in the long-time tradition of Gallery Night.

The Diane Endres Ballweg Art Gallery on the 3rd floor will feature Together With, a collaborative show curated by Young Space. Together With is an exploration of duality, specifically addressing the so-called middle distance between two extremes. The premise of the exhibition was an artistic and geographic exchange, taking place both in Denver, CO, and Madison, WI, in order for artists in the Denver-based artist collective Hyperlink to engage with artists in other parts of the country and vice versa. Whether Denver and Madison are considered West or Midwest, they are both situated within the vast expanse between, and apart from, the two major American art hubs of Los Angeles and New York. Together With draws artists and their work from both coasts while emphasizing the Midwest as a meeting place, a middle ground.

All other floors of Central Library will showcase a variety of artwork including video art, a multi-floor installation, a mixed media mural, live music and much more*! Featured artists include Thomas Hellstrom, Justus Roe, and Katarina Riesing.

Additionally, as a part of a week-long exploration called Library as Retreat Space, the Bubbler Room will hold Listening in the Dark. This exploration of sound and mind will allow you to zoom in on the music by blocking out sight, movement and all other sounds. Venture into the Bubbler Room, sit or lie down, relax, and allow yourself the time to embrace the music styling of CHANTS (and friends).

*Share the Word is a gathering of Madison area poets, writers, spoken word performers, hip hop artists and storytellers, as well as writing organizations and media and arts supporters. This event is happening from 5-7:30pm in Room 301 and has been organized by Library Takeover planning team including: Oscar Mireles, Robert "Dz" Franklin, Diana Gonzalez, Joseph Phelps, and Zora Beach.

*TAROT DECKS will be available on 5/5 for purchase with cash/check, learn more here: madisonbubbler.org/bubblertarot

Windy Tales -- Anime at Hawthorne

Hawthorne Library
05/05/2017
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

As half of her school's very small digital camera club, Nao Ueshima is obsessed with taking photos. What's a bit unusual, however, is her favorite choice of subject: the sky. Unfortunately, when you spend all of your time looking up in the air, sometimes you lose track of where your feet are headed. As a result, some very unusual things start to happen to Nao.

Discovering a cat on top of her favorite rooftop one day, Nao is startled when it suddenly flies away on the wind. Flies, not falls! Even more startling, however, is what happens when Nao falls off the roof herself! Instead of being killed or hurt, Nao makes the most remarkable discovery: there are people who know how to control the flow of the wind - and one of them is one of her teachers! Suddenly school becomes much more interesting as Nao and her friends learn the secrets of everything from Air to Zephyr, and in between they'll also discover a lot about themselves as well.

6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

PLEASE NOTE: This screening has been moved to Tuesday, May 23 at 6:00 pm in room 302.

May Mental Health Month stands to raise awareness of the positive impacts that mental health and wellness can have in individuals’ lives while celebrating those who are living in recovery. The key thing to remember as we come together to support this important cause is that prevention works, treatment is effective, and individuals with mental health conditions can live full and productive lives! Join NAMI Dane County in its mission to start the conversation about mental health with this powerful movie screening co-produced by Demi Lovato and NAMI.

About the documentary: Meet Jeff, Lauren and Lloyd, three different people who share one common experience—their lives have been transformed by speaking up for mental health. The film provides a glimpse into their lives and their diagnoses—which include bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression and anxiety—ultimately weaving together a story about how speaking up is key to living well. Beyond Silence, directed by Shaul Schwarz and executive produced by Demi Lovato, celebrates the strength, perseverance and dedication of these courageous individuals determined to break through the silence often associated with mental illness and help others along the way.

This event is sponsored by NAMI Dane County and Madison Public Library.

Lakeview Library

5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Mending allows us to extend the life of our favorite garments as well as add some fun details. In the Mending Lab we’ll explore different mending styles, both hidden and funky. Margaret Jankowski will demonstrate some common mending techniques and fun embroidery stitches to embellish patches and tears. Bring your mending projects and we’ll work on them together, learning as we go!

Margaret Jankowski is a lifelong sewer and founded The Sewing Machine Project in 2005 as a grassroots way of helping women in need. A lifelong sewer, Margaret has taught sewing, has sold and repaired sewing machines, developed a children’s clothing label and worked as a freelance sewist for American Girl and other area sewing businesses. The Sewing Machine Project’s basic philosophies of providing tools to support women’s endeavors and asking machine recipients to “pay it forward” in their own communities are principles that reflect Margaret’s deepest beliefs.

Codecinella Tech Talk: Becoming a Full Stack Java Web Developer

Codecinella Tech Talk: Becoming a Full Stack Java Web Developer

Bubbler, Central Library
05/16/2017
6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Are you curious about the world of software development? Do you consider yourself technical and want to see inside the mind of one of your peers? Join Karen Rahmeier as she describes some of the techniques she has honed over the last two decades of writing software applications. Specifically, learn how she breaks down problems and works through them in byte-sized pieces along the way to building a functional java web application.
This talk is intented for computer science and information technology students, adults seeking a career change into a technical field, and tech bootcamp graduates with one to three years of employment in the tech sector.
Portions of the talk will be quite technical, but the overview and learning techniques are accessible to a more general audience, and all experience levels are welcome. Come be inspired to take the next step in your professional development by discovering a few new concepts or tools that will make your job easier.

About Codecinella:
We are local Madison, Wisconsin women software developers, students and professionals, looking to strengthen our community, and to encourage more women to become involved in the technology field. Most of us really like solving puzzles, writing code, and learning new technical skills. Some of us are geeks. Some of us are very new to the field, and think we'll like it, but need a safe learning environment in which to figure out how fun it is and how well we fit. All are welcome. We focus on technical talks and hands-on technical workshops, as well as low-key hack sessions. If you want to present a technical talk, we'll help you do that, too.
Codecinella operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization through fiscal sponsorship by the Center for Community Stewardship (C4CS), our fiscal agent.

Book Discussion of Deep Down Dark by Hector Tobar

Book Discussion of Deep Down Dark by Hector Tobar

Hawthorne Library
05/17/2017
6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

When the San José mine collapsed outside of Copiapó, Chile, in August 2010, it trapped thirty-three miners beneath thousands of feet of rock for a record-breaking sixty-nine days. After the disaster, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Héctor Tobar received exclusive access to the miners and their tales, and in Deep Down Dark, he brings them to haunting, visceral life. We learn what it was like to be imprisoned inside a mountain, understand the horror of being slowly consumed by hunger, and experience the awe of working in such a place-one filled with danger and that often felt alive. A masterwork of narrative journalism and a stirring testament to the power of the human spirit, Deep Down Dark captures the profound ways in which the lives of everyone involved in the catastrophe were forever changed.

Gingitsune: Messenger of the Fox Gods -- Anime at Hawthorne

Gingitsune: Messenger of the Fox Gods -- Anime at Hawthorne

Hawthorne Library
05/19/2017
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

In Japan, it is said that if you pray to a deity with sincerity, you will surely feel the divine presence. However, as the successor of the Saeki Inari Shrine, Makoto Saeki can do more than that. She's been seeing and speaking with spirits, kami and other messengers of the Gods since her mother's funeral. It can be difficult, especially when her classmates can't know about her latest "issues" with Gintarou, the irritable fox-like Herald who's protected the Saeki shrine for hundreds of years. But at least Makoto's father, who runs the shrine, knows that Gintarou is more than an imaginary friend.

Between them, the shrine maid and mystical Herald can usually manage to cooperate long enough to help those who need it. However, when a young man with a similar "gift" to Makoto's arrives with his own shrine and Herald issues, it's going to take more than just prayers to sort things out. After all, if there's one thing that both human and supernatural can agree on it's that the Gods often work in convoluted and mysterious ways. Just because you're working for a higher power doesn't mean you always agree with their intentions.

Book Discussion of Dead Wake by Eric Larson

Book Discussion of Dead Wake by Eric Larson

Goodman South Madison Library
05/20/2017
1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic. But the Lusitania was one of the era’s great transatlantic “Greyhounds”—the fastest liner then in service—and her captain, William Thomas Turner, placed tremendous faith in the gentlemanly strictures of warfare that for a century had kept civilian ships safe from attack.

Germany, however, was determined to change the rules of the game, and Walther Schwieger, the captain of Unterseeboot-20, was happy to oblige. Meanwhile, an ultra-secret British intelligence unit tracked Schwieger’s U-boat, but told no one. As U-20 and the Lusitania made their way toward Liverpool, an array of forces both grand and achingly small—hubris, a chance fog, a closely guarded secret, and more—all converged to produce one of the great disasters of history.

Beyond Silence Film Screening

Beyond Silence Film Screening

Central Library, Meeting Room 302
05/23/2017
6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

This event is sponsored by NAMI Dane County and Madison Public Library

Minimalism: Finding Clarity in a Messy Life

Alicia Ashman Library

6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Life is a junk drawer with new baggage getting thrown in everyday. And while many of you are probably thinking, "yeah I know my house could use some decluttering", I don’t just mean the physical baggage. Absolutely, living in a culture of consumerism has a dramatic impact on our life but what is tied to all of the "stuff" and has an even bigger impact is the emotional and mental clutter that takes hold in our life. Old fights unresolved, regret, anger, resentment...these insidious figures seep deep into the cracks of our life and even when we think we have cleaned them from the surface, they persist and it is not without more deep work and self-reflection that we can begin to let go of their grip. Let’s come together and create a deeper awareness and talk about skills to begin to uncluttered this emotional and physical baggage. *If you like this topic, check out "Living with Intentionality" on June 13th.*

6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for Hawthorne Library's monthly book club, The Salad Days! This group is tailored to (but by no means limited to!) readers of the millennial generation looking to explore books and popular culture. We meet the fourth Thursday of each month at The Daisy Cafe and Cupcakery (2827 Atwood Ave). You can pick up books at Hawthorne Library.

"It begins with Peter, a devoted man of faith, as he is called to the mission of a lifetime, one that takes him galaxies away from his wife, Bea. Peter becomes immersed in the mysteries of an astonishing new environment, overseen by an enigmatic corporation known only as USIC. His work introduces him to a seemingly friendly native population struggling with a dangerous illness and hungry for Peter’s teachings—his Bible is their “book of strange new things.” But Peter is rattled when Bea’s letters from home become increasingly desperate: typhoons and earthquakes are devastating whole countries, and governments are crumbling. Bea’s faith, once the guiding light of their lives, begins to falter" (Goodreads, 2017).
