Thematic Mapping with Carto Builder!

Thematic Mapping with Carto Builder!

Bubbler, Central Library
12/07/2016
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

This month at Maptime Madison, Kristen Vincent will show us how to make an interactive thematic map with Carto, formerly CartoDB! But first, what in the world is a thematic map? Thematic maps use number based data to show the distribution or pattern of a particular geography. We’ll review a few thematic map types (examples here, here, and here), discuss best practices, and talk data before turning to Carto Builder—a web-based mapping and spatial analysis tool—to make interactive choropleth maps of US population data. With these new tools under your belt, you’ll be able to explore and display any spatial dataset thematically!

Supplies
There will be several laptops available for your use provided by the Madison Public Library! Feel free to bring your own laptop too. If you can, please make a free account with Carto before Maptime begins!

Pizza
There will be pizza donated by Carto! Please RSVP so we know how much pizza to get!

When and Where

Go Big Read Book Discussion of Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City

Goodman South Madison Library
12/08/2016
6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join in the discussion of UW-Madison’s 2016 Go Big Read Book, “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City.” In this brilliant, heartbreaking book, author Matthew Desmond takes us into the poorest neighborhoods of Milwaukee to tell the story of eight families on the edge. Based on years of embedded fieldwork and painstakingly gathered data, this masterful book transforms our understanding of extreme poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving a devastating, uniquely American problem.

About the author:
Desmond, a UW-Madison alum and recipient of a 2015 MacArthur “Genius” grant, is a sociologist and urban ethnographer who currently serves as Associate Professor in Social Sciences at Harvard University, the Co-Director of the Justice and Poverty Project, and an affiliate of the Institute for Research on Poverty at UW-Madison.

Copies of the book will be available to check out at the library approximately one month before the discussion. Visit http://www.madisonpubliclibrary.org/go-big-read to find other discussions, related events, and more information.

The Boys: the Sherman Brothers Story

Hawthorne Library
12/09/2016
7:00 pm - 7:45 pm

2009 / USA / Documentary / 101 min
Screenwriting cousins Jeff and Gregg Sherman team up to craft this documentary exploring the darker side of the relationship shared between their famous fathers, Robert and Richard. Back in the 1960s, Robert and Richard Sherman rose to fame penning upbeat songs for such classic children's films as Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. But the pair's catchy, optimistic ditties masked a contentious brotherly bond -- which ultimately grew so sour that their sons Jeff and Gregg weren't aware of one another despite the fact that they only lived a few blocks apart.

12/15/2016

Join us for our book club as we read THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS by Vanessa Diffenbaugh.

Summary: The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it’s been more useful in communicating mistrust and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster-care system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her only connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings. Now eighteen and emancipated from the system with nowhere to go, Victoria realizes she has a gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them. But an unexpected encounter with a mysterious stranger has her questioning what’s been missing in her life. And when she’s forced to confront a painful secret from her past, she must decide whether it’s worth risking everything for a second chance at happiness.

The Salad Days Book Club - One More Thing by B.J. Novak

Hawthorne Library
12/15/2016
6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for Hawthorne Library's monthly book club, The Salad Days! This group is tailored to (but by no means limited to!) readers of the millennial generation looking to explore books and popular culture. We meet the fourth Thursday of each month at The Daisy Cafe and Cupcakery (2827 Atwood Ave). You can pick up books at Hawthorne Library.

From an actor, writer, and director of the hit TV comedy The Office (US version): a story collection that was "workshopped" at comedy clubs and bookstores on both coasts.
B.J. Novak's One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories is an endlessly entertaining, surprisingly sensitive, and startlingly original debut collection that signals the arrival of a welcome new voice in American fiction. Across a dazzling range of subjects, themes, tones, and narrative voices, Novak's assured prose and expansive imagination introduce readers to people, places, and premises that are hilarious, insightful, provocative, and moving-often at the same time (Goodreads, 2016).

Book Discussion of The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt

Book Discussion of The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt

Goodman South Madison Library
12/17/2016
1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

When a frontier baron known as the Commodore orders Charlie and Eli Sisters, his hired gunslingers, to track down and kill a prospector named Herman Kermit Warm, the brothers journey from Oregon to San Francisco, and eventually to Warm's claim in the Sierra foothills, running into a witch, a bear, a dead Indian, a parlor of drunken floozies, and a gang of murderous fur trappers. Eli's deadpan narration is at times strangely funny (as when he discovers dental hygiene, thanks to a frontier dentist dispensing free samples of "tooth powder that produced a minty foam") but maintains the power to stir heartbreak, as with Eli's infatuation with a consumptive hotel bookkeeper. As more of the brothers' story is teased out, Charlie and Eli explore the human implications of many of the clichés of the old west and come off looking less and less like killers and more like traumatized young men. With nods to Charles Portis and Frank Norris, DeWitt has produced a genre-bending frontier saga that is exciting, funny, and, perhaps unexpectedly, moving. Publishers Weekly

Book Discussion of Atonement by Ian McEwan

Book Discussion of Atonement by Ian McEwan

Hawthorne Library
12/21/2016
6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

On a hot summer day in 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis witnesses a moment’s flirtation between her older sister, Cecilia, and Robbie Turner, the son of a servant and Cecilia’s childhood friend. But Briony’ s incomplete grasp of adult motives–together with her precocious literary gifts–brings about a crime that will change all their lives. As it follows that crime’s repercussions through the chaos and carnage of World War II and into the close of the twentieth century, Atonement engages the reader on every conceivable level, with an ease and authority that mark it as a genuine masterpiece.

Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport

Hawthorne Library
12/23/2016
7:00 pm - 7:45 pm

2000 / Documentary / 118 min
On November 9, 1938, Adolph Hitler's ugly war against the Jews began in earnest with the "Kristallnacht," in which Nazi troops joined with angry mobs to attack synagogues, Jewish-owned businesses, and residents of predominantly Jewish neighborhoods. While Hitler did not initially make clear his plans for a genocide of Germany's Jews, he openly stated his desire that Germany be free of Jews. Few nations were willing to accept the large numbers of German Jews who now wished to expatriate in fear of their lives. However, Great Britain agreed to permit Jewish children between the ages of 5 and 17 to come to the U.K. -- without their parents. Between December of 1938 and August of 1939, some 10,000 German children gained refuge in the U.K. Most were adopted by British families, and many of the older boys served in the British Army, fighting against the Nazis, but the majority were never to see their birth parents again. Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport is a documentary that looks at the "Kindertransport," which ferried the children to Great Britain, and what became of the children once they arrived in England. Judi Dench narrates.
