Central Cinema Cinesthesia presents Inherent Vice

Central Cinema Cinesthesia presents Inherent Vice

Central Library, Meeting Room 302
01/05/2017
6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Central Cinema Cinesthesia is pleased to present Inherent Vice (2014).

With his latest film, cinephile favorite Paul Thomas Anderson adapts Thomas Pynchon’s psychedelic homage to classic American noir, with a not-so-subtle nod to Robert Altman’s spin on the hard-boiled detective in The Long Goodbye (1973).

A hazy-brained private-eye is tasked by a former girlfriend to investigate a prominent land developer as he fumbles his way through the damaged cultural landscape of 1970’s Los Angeles. Darkly funny and, at times, delightfully incoherent, Inherent Vice is yet another remarkable entry in Anderson’s consistently brilliant body of work.

The Allure of the Ordinary By Members of the Madison Photography Meetup Group

The Allure of the Ordinary By Members of the Madison Photography Meetup Group

Sequoya Library
01/07/2017
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Reception for the members of the Madison Photography Meetup Group:

The theme "The Allure of the Ordinary" speaks to seeing the world around us a little differently. There is beauty everywhere if one is looking for it.

“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”
- Photographer Elliott Erwitt

The primary motivation for this exhibit was the fact that many of our members have never seen their work printed. As photography has become almost entirely digital, most images live exclusively in the computer. Some of them will be shared online, but even in the permanence of the Internet, most will only be seen for a fleeting moment before the viewer moves on to the next thing.

There is just something special about seeing your work as a physical, permanent object. Printed images can allow the viewer to explore the photograph in depth, get close, step back, and discover new characteristics each time they see it. This isn't to say this exploration isn't possible with a digital image, but people tend to move quickly through digital images, rather than linger. We encourage you to linger and explore these images.

Our group, the Madison Photography Meetup, is an inclusive group of individuals who share a passion for photography. We meet every month at a local library to share images and discuss photography. In addition, a few times a month we plan photo outings; a chance for photographers of all skill levels to learn, teach, shoot, and spend time surrounded by others that share their same passion.

Project Itoh: Empire of Corpses

Project Itoh: Empire of Corpses

Hawthorne Library
01/13/2017
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

From the studio that produced Attack on Titan comes a captivating historical action thriller based on an award-winning novel by Project Itoh. In an alternate version of 19th century London, the world has been revolutionized by “corpse reanimation technology” creating armies of undead who serve the living as laborers across the globe.

In an attempt to revive his dearly departed friend, young medical student John Watson becomes obsessed with replicating the work of Dr. Victor Frankenstein—the legendary corpse engineer whose research produced the only re-animated corpse to possess a soul. But when his illegal experiments put him at odds with the British government, Watson is drafted into a worldwide race to find the lost research notes of Victor Frankenstein before the secrets of the human soul fall into the wrong hands.

Wisconsin Book Festival presents Dr. James Hamblin

Wisconsin Book Festival presents Dr. James Hamblin

Central Library, Meeting Room 302
01/17/2017
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Dr. James Hamblin explores the human stories behind health questions that never seem to go away—and which tend to be mischaracterized and oversimplified by marketing and news media. He covers topics such as sleep, aging, diet, and much more: • Can I “boost” my immune system? • Does caffeine make me live longer? • Do we still not know if cell phones cause cancer? • How much sleep do I actually need? • Is there any harm in taking a multivitamin? • Is life long enough? In considering these questions, Hamblin draws from his own medical training as well from hundreds of interviews with distinguished scientists and medical practitioners. He translates the (traditionally boring) textbook of human anatomy and physiology into accessible, engaging, socially contextualized, up-to-the-moment answers. They offer clarity, examine the limits of our certainty, and ultimately help readers worry less about things that don’t really matter.

Book Discussion of Silas Marner by George Eliot

Book Discussion of Silas Marner by George Eliot

Hawthorne Library
01/18/2017
6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

In this heartwarming classic by George Eliot, a gentle linen weaver named Silas Marner is wrongly accused of a heinous theft actually committed by his best friend. Exiling himself to the rustic village of Raveloe, he becomes a lonely recluse. Ultimately, Marner finds redemption and spiritual rebirth through his unselfish love for an abandoned child who mysteriously appears one day in his isolated cottage.

Somber, yet hopeful, Eliot’s realistic depiction of an irretrievable past, tempered with the magical elements of myth and fairy tale, remains timeless in its understanding of human nature and has been beloved for generations.

01/19/2017
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The Madison Arts Commission and the Bubbler are hosting a meeting about the artistic production space needs of the creative sector in Madison at Madison Central Library on Thursday, January 19th at 6:00pm in room 301.

Artists, musicians, and others interested in art spaces are invited to meet with City staff to share their opinions on the topic.

The information gathered in this meeting will provide a deeper grasp of the artists and collectives that are seeking safe, affordable production spaces, the demand for such spaces, and the design elements and building features desired by artists and organizations in our community. This understanding may help City staff as they plan for and review future development in the City. Staff from Planning, Community, and Economic Development will also attend the meeting to listen and/or present.

The meeting will include several short 5-min presentations about art spaces, a survey of needs and preferences, and some ideas about next steps.

Please join us for a discussion of WHITE TEETH by Zadie Smith.

Summary: At the center of this invigorating novel are two unlikely friends, Archie Jones and Samad Iqbal. Hapless veterans of World War II, Archie and Samad and their families become agents of England’s irrevocable transformation. A second marriage to Clara Bowden, a beautiful, albeit tooth-challenged, Jamaican half his age, quite literally gives Archie a second lease on life, and produces Irie, a knowing child whose personality doesn’t quite match her name (Jamaican for “no problem”). Samad’s late-in-life arranged marriage (he had to wait for his bride to be born), produces twin sons whose separate paths confound Iqbal’s every effort to direct them, and a renewed, if selective, submission to his Islamic faith. Set against London’ s racial and cultural tapestry, venturing across the former empire and into the past as it barrels toward the future, WHITE TEETH revels in the ecstatic hodgepodge of modern life, flirting with disaster, confounding expectations, and embracing the comedy of daily existence.

Coloring for Grownups

Coloring for Grownups

Alicia Ashman Library
01/20/2017
6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

What's this coloring-for-grownups craze all about? Come and find out! Coloring for adults can be a stress-reliever, and a low-pressure way to get your creative juices flowing. The instructions?

1. Break out your crayons, colored pencils, or markers. (We'll provide these, but feel free to bring your own if you have favorites).

2. Turn off your phone, tablet, computer, whatever.

3. Start coloring. (We'll have a variety of coloring sheets to choose from).

4. If you notice at any point that you are forgetting your worries, daydreaming freely, or feeling more creative, curious, excitable, delighted, relaxed, or any combination thereof, take a deep breath and enjoy it. Remind yourself that coloring, like dancing or falling in love, does not have a point. It is the point.

5. When you don't feel like it anymore, stop.

This is not a class--there is no formal instruction. No registration required--just drop in, bring your creativity, and color yourself relaxed.

Book Discussion of I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith

Goodman South Madison Library
01/21/2017
1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

I Capture the Castle tells the story of seventeen-year-old Cassandra and her family, who live in not-so-genteel poverty in a ramshackle old English castle. Here she strives, over six turbulent months, to hone her writing skills. She fills three notebooks with sharply funny yet poignant entries. Her journals candidly chronicle the great changes that take place within the castle's walls, and her own first descent into love. By the time she pens her final entry, she has "captured the castle"-- and the heart of the reader-- in one of literature's most enchanting entertainments.

Yes, you can now legally travel to Cuba; and YES, it is definitely worth the visit! Visit Cuba with Kay Guberud, where the people are as warm and welcoming as the climate; the strong Cuban spirit overrides the intense poverty; the city life is exciting, yet jarring; and the rugged, Spartan countryside is enticing. Cuba is much more than cigars, exotic Latin music, pristine 1950’s American automobiles, and refreshing Mojitos, but those are really nice too!

Each week for three weeks we’ll spend about 20 minutes discussing writing prompts on a theme, followed by 20 minutes of quiet time writing together. Then we’ll share what we wrote with each other. The final session will be an open mic session.

Themes: What I wish someone had told me about…

Week 1: Money and Working
Week 2: Getting an Education
Week 3: Finding Love, Keeping Love Alive
Week 4: Open Mic

The Salad Days Book Club - Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper

Hawthorne Library
01/26/2017
6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for Hawthorne Library's monthly book club, The Salad Days! This group is tailored to (but by no means limited to!) readers of the millennial generation looking to explore books and popular culture. We meet the fourth Thursday of each month at The Daisy Cafe and Cupcakery (2827 Atwood Ave). You can pick up books at the Hawthorne Library.

Melody is not like most people. She cannot walk or talk, but she has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She is smarter than most of the adults who try to diagnose her and smarter than her classmates in her integrated classroom - the very same classmates who dismiss her as mentally challenged because she cannot tell them otherwise. But Melody refuses to be defined by cerebral palsy. And she's determined to let everyone know it - somehow. In this breakthrough story, reminiscent of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, from multiple Coretta Scott King Award-winner Sharon Draper, readers will come to know a brilliant mind and a brave spirit who will change forever how they look at anyone with a disability.
