Book Club Café Features Erin Celello

Book Club Café Features Erin Celello

Central Library
05/03/2016
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Author Erin Celello headlines the 19th annual Book Club Café on Tuesday, May 3 at 7pm. The Book Club Café is an annual Friends tradition - an event where book club members and other book lovers gather to celebrate reading and Madison's public libraries.

This year's Book Club Café will take place at the Central Library in downtown Madison. Attendees enjoy catered coffee, tea and desserts from Chocolaterian Cafe; a book gift basket raffle; and a complimentary Book Club Favorites booklet.

Erin Celello is the author of the novels, Miracle Beach and Learning to Stay. She was born and raised in Michigan’s gorgeous Upper Peninsula and earned B.A. in English from St. Norbert College. Eventually, Erin landed in Madison, Wisconsin, where she lives today with her husband, two young sons, and two unruly Vizslas. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Languages and Literatures at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and member of the Tall Poppies Writer's Collective.

Forward Theater of Madison has commissioned playwright James DeVita to adapt Learning to Stay for the stage. A first reading of the play was part of Forward Theater’s Wisconsin Wrights New Play Development Project in the fall of 2015.

This event is hosted by the Friends of the Madison Public Library. Event proceeds benefit all Madison Public Libraries. Visit http://www.madisonpubliclibrary.org/cafe for more information and to purchase tickets.

“Inarritu and director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki contrast the violence and grubbiness of these men with the unspoiled American frontier, and some of the most beautiful shots of natural beauty you’ll ever see in a movie. Tall trees waver against a silvery-gray sky, great rivers slice through canyons, frozen lakes extend in vistas of blue and white in all directions. It’s all quite lovely — until it turns on you.”

Join us at Madison Central Library for this special Gallery Night addition of Night Light.

Featuring an art opening of 40: Collages by Kevin Henkes. Kevin Henkes writes and illustrates award winning children's books for a living, but when he is between books or working on a novel, he finds himself needing to make something with his hands, often that means collages. These 40 abstract collages were made in the past four years with paper he's saved from the 1980s when he was working with Walter Hamady as an undergrad at UW. This is his first exhibition of this kind.

Also featuring new work from Cassie Marie Edwards and Ray Easley in the 1st and 2nd floor galleries at Central Library.

Meet our artists in residence, the ArtWrite collective for interactive art creations in the 3rd floor Madison Room and enjoy a drink from Forequarter.

To Kill a Mockingbird (feature film screening and talk)

Hawthorne Library
05/07/2016
1:00 pm - 3:30 pm

1962 / USA / English / Drama / 129 min.

A screening of the award-winning feature film and an accompanying talk by Children's Theater of Madison's artistic director, Roseann Sheridan.

Gregory Peck won an Oscar® for his brilliant performance as the Southern lawyer who defends a black man accused of rape in this film version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The way in which it captures a time, a place, and above all, a mood, makes this film a masterpiece. The setting is a dusty Southern town during the Depression. A white woman accuses a black man of rape. Though he is obviously innocent, the outcome of his trial is such a foregone conclusion that no lawyer will step forward to defend him – except Peck, the town's most distinguished citizen. His compassionate defense costs him many friendships but earns him the respect and admiration of his two motherless children.

Enjoy the film -- and don't miss the Children's Theater of Madison's performances of the play, May 6 - May 22. Check out http://www.ctmtheater.org/see-a-show/to-kill-a-mockingbird

Wolf Totem

Wolf Totem

Hawthorne Library
05/13/2016
7:00 pm - 7:45 pm

2015 / China & France / Nature Drama / 115 min. / Rated PG-13

The acclaimed French director Jean-Jacques Annaud (Seven Years in Tibet), adapted the best-selling novel and follows a Beijing student who views the impact of the Chinese cultural revolution on the nomadic herdsmen of Inner Mongolia. The student becomes fascinated by wolf culture — eventually taking a wolf cub.

"Wolf Totem is a powerful multi-layered autobiographical novel, where the main love story between a young man and a wolf cub is intertwined with the fascinating discovery of the Mongol nomadic culture," says Annaud, via email. "The book was rich in seldom seen 'movie scenes,' some of epic proportions, some intimate and full of heartfelt emotions. On the top of this, the book digs into universal themes that are among the most relevant today."

Refreshments will be served:) The films will start at 7:00 pm. Hawthorne Library closes at 8:00 pm -- if you need to check items out, you will need to do so before 8:00 pm. The program room and restrooms will remain open until the conclusion of the film.

Book Discussion of I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith

Hawthorne Library

6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

I Capture the Castle tells the story of seventeen-year-old Cassandra and her family, who live in not-so-genteel poverty in a ramshackle old English castle. Here she strives, over six turbulent months, to hone her writing skills. She fills three notebooks with sharply funny yet poignant entries. Her journals candidly chronicle the great changes that take place within the castle's walls, and her own first descent into love. By the time she pens her final entry, she has "captured the castle"--and the heart of the reader--in one of literature's most enchanting entertainments.

05/19/2016
6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Join us for our book club as we read THE INVENTION OF WINGS by Sue Monk Kidd. Summary: Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women. Kidd’s sweeping novel is set in motion on Sarah’s eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership of ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys over the next thirty five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other’s destinies and forming a complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement and the uneasy ways of love. Blue Spring Ride (anime)

Blue Spring Ride (anime)

Hawthorne Library
05/20/2016
7:00 pm - 7:55 pm

Can you change who you are inside? In middle school, Futaba's shy nature and cute appearance attracted boys, but made other girls so jealous that she became a social outcast. So, when high school began, Futaba remade herself, becoming sloppy and pretending to be unfeminine… and now she has friends! But her new world comes crashing down when she runs into a boy she used to know: Kou. The one boy who could have become more than just a friend. Except Kou's changed as well. So much so that she barely recognizes him. And while the attraction that she used to feel seems to still be there in her heart, he doesn't seem to feel the same way anymore. Or does he? Is the difference in the way Kou's acting due to how different she's ostensibly become? Or have they both changed too much to ever recapture what they had? What goes around, comes around, as two young people rediscover each other and their own true selves in BLUE SPRING RIDE.

Anime will be shown in Japanese with English subtitles. Films are for an adult and older teen audience and may include adult (rating of 17+) content. The Hawthorne Library closes at 8:00 pm. The screening room will remain open and films will be shown until approx. 9:00-9:30. Restrooms and water bubbler will be accessible, but if you wish to check out, you will need to do so before 8:00 pm.

LakeFrontRow presents 19, The Tony Robinson Shooting

Central Library, Meeting Rooms 301 & 302
05/25/2016
6:30 pm - 8:45 pm

LakeFrontRow is proud to present the Madison-area premiere of 19,The Tony Robinson Shooting: A Case of Deadly Bias, directed by Tim Poehlmann-Tynan.

The film revisits events that led to the officer-involved shooting of Tony Robinson on March 6, 2015. With a forensic approach to dashboard camera recordings, 911 calls and the officers's own law enforcement record, this documentary pushes back against conflicting narratives of the shooting and the media's problematizing use of stereotypical binaries.

An uncompromising exorcism of Madison's relationships with race and violence, the film is also a humanizing document in search of justice, truth and love.

A panel discussion with director Tim Poehlmann-Tynan, Young, Gifted and Black co-founder Brandi Grayson, and Wisconsin State Representative Chris Taylor will follow the film.

The Salad Days Book Club - Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

The Salad Days Book Club - Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

Hawthorne Library
05/26/2016
6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for Hawthorne Library's monthly book club, The Salad Days! This group is tailored to (but by no means limited to!) readers of the millennial generation looking to explore books and popular culture. We meet the fourth Thursday of each month at The Daisy Cafe and Cupcakery (2827 Atwood Ave). You can pick up books at the Hawthorne Library.

"Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads: Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit flustered at times, who wouldn’t be, with those rambunctious twin boys?" New to town, single mom Jane is so young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her years and harbors secret doubts about her son. But why? While Madeline and Celeste soon take Jane under their wing, none of them realizes how the arrival of Jane and her inscrutable little boy will affect them all.

Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive. (Goodreads, 2016).
