Artist in Residence: Open Studio time with Josh Duncan

Bubbler, Central Library
07/01/2016
12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Swing by the Bubbler on Thursday and Friday afternoons in June and July to meet Artist in Residence Josh Duncan. You may even appear as a character in one of his zines!

During his residency, Josh will be reading books and making comics, both about the books he is reading and about resources at the library itself, including the Bubbler. His drawings and drawing exercises will encourage visitors, particularly kids, to explore and make discoveries in the library. By the end of the residency, he will produce a series of zines unified by the theme of showcasing the valuable information one can discover in a library.

Josh Duncan, known online as “Josh The Cartoon Guy,” got started by drawing superhero adventures with his best friend. As a graduate student at UW-Madison, Josh worked with his fellow students of Professor Lynda Barry in the UW-Comics Club. Both the club and the Making Comics Workshops rekindled Josh’s lifelong love of cartooning, and inspired him to use cartooning to become a better student in every class he took. In addition to working as an art teacher, Josh hopes to write fictional and non-fictional comics which will demonstrate their potential as an educational tool in multiple fields.

You know, sometimes comics get a bad wrap. But did you know comics teach us important lessons about life? About the world? And improve our brains as learners? You did?! Join us for this hands-on workshop with artist in residence Josh Duncan to explore what comics teach us about life and create your own comic with one of the UW Comics Club's favorite activities, Bat Cat has an Idea!

Josh Duncan, known online as “Josh The Cartoon Guy,” got started by drawing superhero adventures with his best friend. A recent graduate of UW with a Masters in Arts Education, Josh was the president of the UW comics club. Both the club and the Making Comics Workshops with Linda Barry rekindled Josh’s lifelong love of cartooning, and inspired him to use cartooning to become a better student in every class he took. In addition to working as an art teacher, Josh hopes to write fictional and non-fictional comics which will demonstrate their potential as an educational tool in multiple fields.

“The physical exercise and emotional stretching that children enjoy in unorganized play is more varied and less time-bound than is found in organized sports. Playtime—especially unstructured, imaginative, exploratory play—is increasingly recognized as an essential component of wholesome child development.”
― Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder
Come play with us at the Haen Family Park [7702 Tree Lane] every Tuesday through the end of July. The library will provide special Anji Play equipment to inspire your children's imagination. In Anji Play, children enjoy self-determination in play. They choose what, where, with whom and even whether to play. Wear messy clothes, bring a water bottle and leave your inhibitions at home! This event is in partnership with Anji Play, the Madison Parks Division, and the Madison Children's Museum. The Open Lab scheduled for July 6 has been canceled.

The Personal Archiving Lab at the Madison Public Library is a collection of equipment that can be used to digitize at-risk analog materials, like home movies, video tapes, audio cassettes, photographs, and other paper-based documents.

All are welcome to use the Lab, free of charge, on Wednesdays from 3-8pm (Room 210). It may also be possible to make an appointment, at least one week in advance, by calling the Central Library at 266-6350.

The Library’s Personal Archiving Lab supports the following formats:

- VHS tapes
- VHS-C tapes
- DVDs (not BlueRay)
- Audio cassettes
- MiniDV tapes
- Hi-8 tapes
- Photographs / negatives / slides
- Paper-based documents

Be advised that when transferring from analog to digital formats, such as VHS, Hi-8, or audio cassette, your media will be captured in real time.

Artist in Residence: Open Studio time with Josh Duncan

Bubbler, Central Library
07/07/2016

The head of a cyborg reactivates and rebuilds itself and goes on a violent rampage in a space marine's girlfriend's apartment.
IMDb page - www.imdb.com/title/tt0099740

"An uncompromising and brutal little independent shocker, Hardware is a sci-fi/horror hybrid that mixes incredibly intense violence and tension with surprisingly intelligent social commentary. Although the film’s deceptively simple plotline is as generic as the come (an evil robot kills a bunch of people – that’s pretty much it, folks), this is a movie that truly and uniquely feels like few before or sense."

Artist in Residence Workshop: Great Works of Literature with Cartoon Characters

Bubbler, Central Library
07/08/2016
4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Oliver Twist starring Scooby Doo? Bad Kitty The Sorcerer's Stone? No... Sponge-Bob Square Pants and the Lightening Thief! The stories we love and the characters we know are a great inspiration for aspiring cartoonists! Join artist in residence Josh Duncan for this hands-on mashup mayhem cartooning class at the Bubbler.

Great for kiddos 6 and up and their grown-ups. Siblings always welcome, but children under 6 should be accompanied by an adult. No registration required.

This workshop in the Bubbler is funded by a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services.

07/09/2016
10:00 am - 1:00 pm

If you are spending your Saturday out and about, but sure to swing by the Bubbler at Central Library to Meet Your local Makers.

Join Carli from 10am-11am for an interactive drawing workshop, of drop in from 11am-1pm to interact and learn play games with the animation process.

Carli is a professional cartoonist and published comic book illustrator. Her work is highly inspired by the animations and illustrations from Her childhood. Emotion and movement are key the elements in each piece of her art and it is her goal to capture the playfulness and fantasy that can be found in everyday life.

In Carli's workshop you will be learning the helpful tips and tricks you need to utilize to design and create your own character/creature. You will be working through multiple common roadblocks in the creation process and she will be sharing with you some fun activities and challenges that can lead to some great design. We will also be playing some fun drawing/creative games that would be fun for any family to do with their children to keep their creativity growing. Anyone involved in the workshop is welcome to draw along with her or to find their own inspiration and ideas from the lesson. At the end she will be giving out each of her drawings done during the class to anyone who would like one.

Artist in Residence: Open Studio time with Josh Duncan

Artist in Residence: Open Studio time with Josh Duncan

Bubbler, Central Library
07/14/2016

In a futuristic Japan, the Sibyl System is charged with keeping the peace. Using extensive surveillance and biological monitoring to gauge the likelihood that individuals will commit a crime, the police are able to use weapons called Dominators to remove potential criminals from the population before they become a problem. Confident with the success of the System within their own borders, the Japanese government has begun to export the technology to other countries, planning to ultimately spread the System across the globe.

When the state of SEAUn brings the Sibyl System in to test its effectiveness, it becomes a haven of peace and safety—for a time. Eventually, terrorists from SEAUn begin appearing in Japan, somehow slipping through the System’s security and attacking from within. Desperate for answers, Inspector Akane Tsunemori is sent overseas to bring the terrorists to justice. But when her investigation forces her into a standoff with an old ally, will she be able to pull the trigger?

Learn more about Anji Play at www.AnjiPlay.com. *If you have a camera or smartphone, you're invited to bring that along too!*

Artist in Residence: Open Studio time with Josh Duncan

Bubbler, Central Library
07/21/2016

Digital Preservation 101

Pinney Library
07/21/2016
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Individuals tend to equate digital items with permanence and longevity, but just like the physical items we cherish (home movies, scrapbooks, old letters), our digital files (iPhoto Libraries, social media accounts, and digital files) are at risk of decay, obsolescence, and loss.

This lecture / workshop will cover the best ways to care for your digital files in order to strengthen the possibility that your memories will remain accessible well into the future. Easy-to-implement preservation practices will be discussed, as well as options for external / cloud storage, how to access the content you've uploaded to social media, and things to avoid when managing the files on your computer.

So that we can accomodate the correct number of attendees, please register if you are interested in attending this event. Registration opens July 7th.

Hateful Eight (adult feature film)

Hawthorne Library
07/22/2016
7:00 pm - 7:45 pm

2015 / USA / English / Western, Drama / 168 min. / Rated R
Six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie's Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Demian Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…

THE HATEFUL EIGHT also stars Channing Tatum, James Parks, Dana Gourrier, Zoë Bell, Gene Jones, Keith Jefferson, Lee Horsley, Craig Stark, and Belinda Owino.

Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, THE HATEFUL EIGHT is produced by Richard N. Gladstein, Stacey Sher and Shannon McIntosh. Harvey Weinstein, Bob Weinstein and Georgia Kacandes are executive producers, and Coco Francini and William Paul Clark are associate producers.

If you are spending your Saturday out and about, but sure to swing by the Bubbler at Central Library to Meet Your local Makers.

Forrest is a Madison mixed media artist that enjoys working with used, new and reclaimed materials. She mostly works with handmade paper, fabric, beads, wire, thread, wool and yarn. Drop in any time from 10am-1pm to get inspiration from Forrest's work and create your own Mixed Media Bookmark with handmade paper, fabric, ribbon, beads, felt, natural and found materials. An open ended and fun project, this workshop is great for all ages!

Artist in Residence: Open Studio time with Josh Duncan

Bubbler, Central Library
07/28/2016

6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for Hawthorne Library's monthly book club, The Salad Days! This group is tailored to (but by no means limited to!) readers of the millennial generation looking to explore books and popular culture. We meet the fourth Thursday of each month at The Daisy Cafe and Cupcakery (2827 Atwood Ave). You can pick up books at the Hawthorne Library.

"After the grisly murder of his entire family, a toddler wanders into a graveyard where the ghosts and other supernatural residents agree to raise him as one of their own. Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead. There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack—who has already killed Bod's family." (Goodreads, 2016).

Yurikuma Arashi (anime)

Hawthorne Library
07/29/2016
7:00 pm - 7:55 pm

From Kunihiko Ikuhara, the director of Sailor Moon and Revolutionary Girl Utena, comes a beautifully animated, allegorical tale of love, loss, and bear attacks.

In a world divided between humans and hyper-intelligent, man-eating bears, Kureha attends an all-girls school and holds onto a simple wish—to spend the rest of her life with her classmate and soul mate, Sumika. But after a secret rendezvous ends in tragedy, Kureha vows to never back down on her love and put a bullet in any bear she meets.

As she plots her revenge, the bear-attack body count begins to rise and two strange girls transfer into Kureha’s class. She doesn’t know it yet, but the girls who call themselves Ginko and Lulu are actually criminal bears in disguise! As they try to win Kureha’s heart , an army of high school girls gears up to go to war with all of bear-kind and anyone else who stands up for love.
