Artist in Residence: Open Studio time with Josh Duncan

Bubbler, Central Library
06/02/2016
12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Swing by the Bubbler on Thursday and Friday afternoons in June and July to meet Artist in Residence Josh Duncan. You may even appear as a character in one of his zines!

During his residency, Josh will be reading books and making comics, both about the books he is reading and about resources at the library itself, including the Bubbler. His drawings and drawing exercises will encourage visitors, particularly kids, to explore and make discoveries in the library. By the end of the residency, he will produce a series of zines unified by the theme of showcasing the valuable information one can discover in a library.

Josh Duncan, known online as “Josh The Cartoon Guy,” got started by drawing superhero adventures with his best friend. As a graduate student at UW-Madison, Josh worked with his fellow students of Professor Lynda Barry in the UW-Comics Club. Both the club and the Making Comics Workshops rekindled Josh’s lifelong love of cartooning, and inspired him to use cartooning to become a better student in every class he took. In addition to working as an art teacher, Josh hopes to write fictional and non-fictional comics which will demonstrate their potential as an educational tool in multiple fields.

What are the things most immediate to a poet? This program will encourage participants to interrogate your present moment and also where you are from. We will ask ourselves how these things define us, or not. Using the basic elements of poetic craft, we will discuss voice, form, sensory detail, and the importance of the image in a poem. We will end up learning about each other and ourselves.

Dylan Weir is an MFA candidate in Poetry at the University of Wisconsin, Madison where he teaches creative writing. He has work in (or forthcoming from): Rhino, The Boiler, decomP, Blue Earth Review, H_NMG_N, Rust+Moth & others. Dylan is a Co-Editor of Devil’s Lake and recently placed second in The Great Lakes Review Poetry Prize. He also received an MA with Distinction in English Literature from DePaul University where his thesis was a manuscript of poems titled dipsomania.

Reading in a fun, nonjudgmental environment can help your child feel good about reading -- it can help a shy child or a child who is having trouble learning to read gain confidence and skills.

Artist in Residence: Open Studio time with Josh Duncan

Artist in Residence: Open Studio time with Josh Duncan

Bubbler, Central Library
06/09/2016

Artist in Residence: Open Studio time with Josh Duncan

Artist in Residence: Open Studio time with Josh Duncan

Bubbler, Central Library
06/10/2016

Book Discussion of Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

Hawthorne Library
06/15/2016
6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.
Twenty years later, Kirsten moves between the settlements of the altered world with a small troupe of actors and musicians. They call themselves The Traveling Symphony, and they have dedicated themselves to keeping the remnants of art and humanity alive. But when they arrive in St. Deborah by the Water, they encounter a violent prophet who will threaten the tiny band’s existence. And as the story takes off, moving back and forth in time, and vividly depicting life before and after the pandemic, the strange twist of fate that connects them all will be revealed.

Artist in Residence: Open Studio time with Josh Duncan

Bubbler, Central Library
06/16/2016

06/16/2016
6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Join us for our book club as we read BREAD & BUTTER by local author Michelle Wildgen. Summary: Britt and Leo have spent ten years running Winesap, the best restaurant in their small Pennsylvania town. When their younger brother, Harry, opens his own restaurant—a hip little joint serving an aggressive lamb neck dish—Britt and Leo find their own restaurant thrown off-kilter. Britt becomes fascinated by a customer who arrives night after night, each time with a different dinner companion. Their pastry chef, Hector, quits, only to reappear at Harry's restaurant. And Leo finds himself falling for his executive chef. Filled with hilarious insider detail—the one-upmanship of staff meals before the shift begins, the rivalry between bartender and hostess, the seedy bar where waitstaff and chefs go to drink off their workday—Bread and Butter is both an incisive novel of family and a gleeful romp through the inner workings of restaurant kitchens. The Paris Wife by Paula McLain

The Paris Wife by Paula McLain

Goodman South Madison Library
06/18/2016
1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

This is the fictionalized account of Hadley Richardson, a pretty but unglamorous Midwesterner, who was the object of the 20-year-old Hemingway's affections. It was Richardson who shared Hemingway's years as a poor, still-unknown writer in Paris. McLain says she didn't want to write yet another biography about Richardson, but she wanted instead to go deeper; to imagine what Richardson's life in Paris was like and what she was thinking as she moved through the circle of artists and intellectuals that the young couple met there.

“The physical exercise and emotional stretching that children enjoy in unorganized play is more varied and less time-bound than is found in organized sports. Playtime—especially unstructured, imaginative, exploratory play—is increasingly recognized as an essential component of wholesome child development.”
― Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder
Come play with us at the Haen Family Park [7702 Tree Lane] every Tuesday through the end of July. The library will provide special Anji Play equipment to inspire your children's imagination. In Anji Play, children enjoy self-determination in play. They choose what, where, with whom and even whether to play. Wear messy clothes, bring a water bottle and leave your inhibitions at home! This event is in partnership with Anji Play, the Madison Parks Division, and the Madison Children's Museum. We have taken absolute beginners and in one quarter, taught them to play 10 tunes. As they progress in quarters, they are given more challenging music and by the end of the year, many kids are playing very well.

Aprende este gran pasatiempo al hacer su propia cometa en miniatura. Durante este taller, Julio también compartirá información sobre la historia cultural y espiritual de las cometas.

6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for Hawthorne Library's monthly book club, The Salad Days! This group is tailored to (but by no means limited to!) readers of the millennial generation looking to explore books and popular culture. We meet the fourth Thursday of each month at The Daisy Cafe and Cupcakery (2827 Atwood Ave). You can pick up books at the Hawthorne Library.

"Written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman imparts a fuller, richer understanding and appreciation of Harper Lee. Here is an unforgettable novel of wisdom, humanity, passion, humor and effortless precision--a profoundly affecting work of art that is both wonderfully evocative of another era and relevant to our own times. It not only confirms the enduring brilliance of To Kill a Mockingbird, but also serves as its essential companion, adding depth, context and new meaning to an American classic" (Goodreads, 2016).

Breathe (foreign feature film)

Hawthorne Library
06/24/2016
7:00 pm - 7:45 pm

France / 2014 / Drama / French with English Subtitles / 91 minutes
A taut, nuanced story about the depths of female friendships and the dark side of teenage infatuations, BREATHE, the sophomore directorial effort from Mélanie Laurent (Inglorious Basterds, Beginners), is an assured adaptation of the sensational French young adult novel of the same name. Charlie (Joséphine Japy) is seventeen and bored. Her estranged parents are too caught up in their own drama to pay her much attention. School holds no surprises either, and Charlie grows tired of her staid friends. Enter Sarah (Lou de Laâge), a confident and charismatic new transfer student who brings with her an alluring air of boldness and danger. The two form an instant connection, and through shared secrets, love interests and holiday getaways their relationship deepens to levels of unspoken intimacy. But with this intimacy comes jealousy and unrealistic expectations, and soon the teens find themselves on a dangerous trajectory toward an inevitable and unforeseen collapse.
Films will start at 7:00 pm. Hawthorne Library closes at 8:00 pm -- if you need to check items out, you will need to do so before 8:00 pm. The program room and restrooms will remain open until the conclusion of the film.

Kite-making is a craft that Julio Flores learned from his Abuelo, or grandfather, who learned during his childhood in the North Coast town of Cataño, Puerto Rico.

Learn more about Anji Play at www.AnjiPlay.com. *If you have a camera or smartphone, you're invited to bring that along too!*

Artist in Residence: Open Studio time with Josh Duncan

Artist in Residence: Open Studio time with Josh Duncan

Bubbler, Central Library
06/30/2016

"Under the Gun" Film Screening

"Under the Gun" Film Screening

Central Library, Meeting Room 301
06/30/2016
6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Every day more than 90 Americans are shot and killed -- and hundreds more are injured. So what is keeping America from finding common ground on preventing gun violence? Through the lens of families affected by shootings in Chicago, Newtown, Aurora, Isla Vista, Tucson, the film examines why many politicians are refusing to act and what a growing movement of Americans are doing to change that. Filmmaker Stephanie Soechtig and Katie Couric (the team behind the 2014 Sundance Film Festival hit FED UP) join forces again to create a documentary that is scrupulously comprehensive and decidedly fair to both sides of one of the most polarizing issues that is tearing our country apart. Searing and powerful with never-before-seen footage of the shooting in Aurora, UNDER THE GUN gives a human face to a crisis that is costing us in blood and scarring the conscience of a nation. A Q&A will follow the film screening.

The film’s sponsor, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, was created to demand action from legislators, companies, and educational institutions to establish common-sense gun reforms. Since it was founded by stay-at-home mom Shannon Watts on December 15, 2012 in response to the devastating shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, their organization has flourished to become a leading force for gun violence prevention, with chapters in all 50 states.
