IMDb entry - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0787524/

He isn’t a city resident of Calcutta or Bombay with the pedigree to study at Cambridge. England wasn’t even a dream."

Wisconsin Book Festival presents Darryl "DMC" McDaniels

Wisconsin Book Festival presents Darryl "DMC" McDaniels

Central Library, Meeting Rooms 301 & 302
09/02/2016
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Legendary artist Darryl DMC McDaniels had it all—public adulation, the respect of his peers, money, and celebrity status. But, it all imploded when, overwhelmed by such success at a young age, he sank into a world of depression, alcoholism, and regular thoughts of suicide. In his brutally frank memoir, TEN WAYS NOT TO COMMIT SUICIDE, McDaniels recounts his slide into emotional darkness and the ways he worked to rise out of his depression and embrace the gift of life. McDaniels’s story has particular resonance in our time, with a rising epidemic of suicide among black men. Indeed, suicide is the #3 leading cause of death among African Americans. Books available for purchase and author signing after the event. Full event info at http://www.wisconsinbookfestival.org/events/ten-ways-not-commit-suicide

Join Nyamnyam as they take a deep dive into Michael Pollan’s book "Food Rules: An Eater's Manual." Using the kitchen/Bubbler table as laboratory, they will put the rules into practice engaging visitors to examine how they think about food.

With a table as a stage, objects and ingredients will combine in a poetic manner to construct a scenario and who know's we might end up with a “play"! Look forwards to great conversations, interesting thought, and fun around engaging with food!

Nyamnyam is a Barcelona-based arts collective that aims to promote creativity, knowledge exchange and culture by creating and sharing strategies to generate dialogue. We create a link between diverse forms of art, using food as a vehicle to create situations that invigorate relations and social contact between people.

"Under the Gun" Film Screening

"Under the Gun" Film Screening

Alicia Ashman Library
09/09/2016
7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Every day more than 90 Americans are shot and killed -- and hundreds more are injured. So what is keeping America from finding common ground on preventing gun violence? Through the lens of families affected by shootings in Chicago, Newtown, Aurora, Isla Vista, Tucson, the film examines why many politicians are refusing to act and what a growing movement of Americans are doing to change that. Filmmaker Stephanie Soechtig and Katie Couric (the team behind the 2014 Sundance Film Festival hit FED UP) join forces again to create a documentary that is scrupulously comprehensive and decidedly fair to both sides of one of the most polarizing issues that is tearing our country apart. Searing and powerful with never-before-seen footage of the shooting in Aurora, UNDER THE GUN gives a human face to a crisis that is costing us in blood and scarring the conscience of a nation. A Q&A will follow the film screening.

The film’s sponsor, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, was created to demand action from legislators, companies, and educational institutions to establish common-sense gun reforms. Since it was founded by stay-at-home mom Shannon Watts on December 15, 2012 in response to the devastating shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, their organization has flourished to become a leading force for gun violence prevention, with chapters in all 50 states.

6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

In the Intro to Audio Engineering workshop, a professional audio engineer will walk you through how to set up a basic recording session and record audio! We start with set up and end with diving into specific questions participants might have such as "How do you do that effect where it sounds like the singer is talking through a cell phone?" and "What are the differences between microphones and how do I know which one to use?" Personal instruments and microphones are not required, but if you have something you'd like to bring in, feel free!

Monday evening workshops are staffed by Sadie with expertise in audio engineering, live sound, and recording. The Bubbler and the Media Lab are supported by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

This workshop was funded by a gift from Marvin J. Levy.

Fair Trade: A Consumer Driven Strategy to Reduce Poverty

Fair Trade: A Consumer Driven Strategy to Reduce Poverty

Central Library, Meeting Room 301
09/13/2016
7:00 pm - 8:45 pm

UNA of Dane County Presents - Fair Trade: A Consumer Driven Strategy to Reduce Poverty

Fair Trade was started 70 years ago in the U.S. as a strategy to help low income people in developing countries escape poverty and build economically sustainable lives. It has grown into a global movement committed to promoting consumer driven economic change that will promote increased social justice, better working conditions and less disparity of income.

Bob will explore the history of the fair trade movement, its ten core principles, and its goals and objectives. He will delve into its impact on the lives of low income artisans and workers in developing countries, with particularly emphasis on ways the movement provides an alternative to sweat shop produced products, particularly clothing. He will also discuss the role Madison has played in this growing movement.

Bob will be joined by “stars” from Madison’s own roller derby team, Mad Rollin’ Dolls who will model current fair trade fashions offered by Serrv and other fair trade organizations.

Bob Chase has been CEO of SERRV International, a 65 year old nonprofit fair trade and development organization, for the last 27 years. Previous he and his wife owned and operated in fair trade store. He is a member of the board of directors of the World Fair Trade Organization, past member of the board of directors of the Fair Trade Federation and is UNA Dane County Treasurer.

Author Event! An Evening with Betsy Draine and Michael Hinden

Sequoya Library
09/14/2016
7:00 pm - 8:45 pm

Who shot Vincent van Gogh? And who would kill to know it? Come join Betsy Draine and Michael Hinden, coauthors of "Death on a Starry Night," their third Nora Barnes and Toby Sandler mystery novel!

When art historian Nora Barnes returns to France for a Van Gogh conference in the charming medieval village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, she’s expecting a vigorous debate about whether the famed artist’s suicide was actually a homicide. But on the night before the conference, an elderly French woman who’d promised to reveal important evidence is found head down in the village fountain, and her Chanel briefcase is nowhere to be seen.

During a week of academic squabbling, dining, romance, and suspense, the quirky conference members, one by one, fall under police suspicion and the amused gaze of Nora’s husband, Toby. But someone wants to halt Nora and Toby’s amateur sleuthing, and what happens next is no joke. Read more about the book and authors at uwpress.wisc.edu/books/5510.htm

Bombay Beach is one of the poorest communities in southern California located on the shores of the Salton Sea, a man-made sea stranded in the middle of the Colorado desert that was once a beautiful vacation destination for the privileged and is now a pool of dead fish. Film director Alma Har'el tells the story of three protagonists. The trials of Benny Parrish, a young boy diagnosed with bipolar disorder, CeeJay Thompson, a black teenager who hopes to avoid the same fate of his cousin who was murdered by an LA gang; and Red, an ancient survivor, once an oil field worker, living on the fumes of whiskey, cigarettes and an irrepressible love of life. Together these portraits form a triptych of manhood in its various ages and guises.

Write Family History Others Will Want to Read

Central Library, Conference Room (first floor)
09/20/2016
6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Be the ancestor you wish you had! Learn to create lively, richly detailed stories for future generations to enjoy.

In this workshop for beginning writers we explore how to write and share stories that reveal your family's formative experiences, values, and life lessons. We will spend five sessions discussing how to find the stories worth telling; how to convey the essence of people, places and events; how to deal ethically with the dilemmas of writing true stories about real people; and finally, how to share your work with others!

For each class meeting, students write a few pages. Each class meeting includes time to share writing in a supportive environment. To enhance small-group interaction, enrollment is limited to 15. Anyone age 14 to 114 is welcome to participate. Attendees should bring paper and pen/pencils for in-class exercises.

The single most important thing you can do for your family may be the simplest of all: tell your story!

What past participants are saying:
“I loved the tips, presenting my writing, and listening to others’ stories.” “It got me started capturing the stories that have been running through my memories.”

“Sarah gave me ideas to try when I get serious about writing family history.” “My daughter has loved reading the stories I wrote in this workshop.”

About the presenter: Personal historian Sarah White has taught reminiscence and family history writing workshops in the Madison area and online since 2004. She is the author of "Madison Women Remember: Growing Up in Wisconsin’s Capital."

Join in the discussion of UW-Madison’s 2016 Go Big Read Book, “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City.” In this brilliant, heartbreaking book, author Matthew Desmond takes us into the poorest neighborhoods of Milwaukee to tell the story of eight families on the edge. About the author:
Desmond, a UW-Madison alum and recipient of a 2015 MacArthur “Genius” grant, is a sociologist and urban ethnographer who currently serves as Associate Professor in Social Sciences at Harvard University, the Co-Director of the Justice and Poverty Project, and an affiliate of the Institute for Research on Poverty at UW-Madison.

The Salad Days Book Club - Arcadia by Lauren Groff

Hawthorne Library
09/22/2016
6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for Hawthorne Library's monthly book club, The Salad Days! This group is tailored to (but by no means limited to!) readers of the millennial generation looking to explore books and popular culture. We meet the fourth Thursday of each month at The Daisy Cafe and Cupcakery (2827 Atwood Ave). You can pick up books at the Hawthorne Library.

"In the fields and forests of western New York State in the late 1960s, several dozen idealists set out to live off the land, founding what becomes a famous commune centered on the grounds of a decaying mansion called Arcadia House. Arcadia follows this lyrical, rollicking, tragic, and exquisite utopian dream from its hopeful start through its heyday and after. The story is told from the point of view of Bit, a fascinating character and the first child born in Arcadia." (Goodreads, 2016).

His normal life of school, baseball, and video games had previously been distinguished only by his Pakistani heritage and by the frequent chill between his parents, who fight over things he is too young to understand. Then Mina arrives, and everything changes. American Dervish is a brilliantly written, nuanced, and emotionally forceful look inside the interplay of religion and modern life. Special Film Screening: PRESENTING PRINCESS SHAW

Meadowridge Library
09/23/2016
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

In partnership with the Wisconsin Film Festival, the library is pleased to present a screening of PRESENTING PRINCESS SHAW. This film delighted audiences at the 2016 Wisconsin Film Festival. It is being presented at Meadowridge Library free of charge. Run time is 83 minutes.

“Princess Shaw dreams of making it big, but her natural gifts go unnoticed at empty open mic nights and dismal reality show auditions…But across the world, Kutiman is listening, crafting sensuous backing tracks to her a capella vocals. When he uploads his version of her songs, we are there for the delirious moment that Princess Shaw realizes she’s gone viral. As close as life can get to a fairy tale, this magical cross-cultural collaboration will have you singing along in your seat.”
-Mike King, Wisconsin Film Festival senior programmer

Madison hip-hop musician Rob Dz will speak to his expertise in DIY music recording, production and promotion, showing that anyone can create music and share their voice.

Seating is first come, first served. Doors open 1/2 hour before start time.

This film has not been rated by the MPAA . Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

This event is funded in part through a grant from Beyond the Page, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and Madison Community Foundation. For more information, visit http://www.beyondthepage.info.

I have feelings I can’t tell anybody hidden deep in a shell inside of my heart. But, really, I want to shout it out…my honest feelings like a beautiful anthem is waiting to break free!

Jun is a girl whose words have been sealed away. She was once a very happy girl, but because of a "certain thing" she said when she was very young, her family was torn apart. Then, the egg fairy appeared in front of her and sealed away her ability to talk in order to stop her from hurting anybody else. Since this traumatic experience, Jun lives in the shadows away from the limelight. Years later -- she is nominated to become an executive member of the “community outreach council.” On top of that, Jun is also appointed to play the main lead in their musical…

"Share the Life Lessons" Write-In with Sarah White

"Share the Life Lessons" Write-In with Sarah White

Pinney Library
09/29/2016
3:30 pm - 8:30 pm

We all have valuable lessons to share, earned through life experience. But we seldom make time to capture them in words for future generations!
Let’s spend some time together writing personal and family stories that share values and life lessons. For each topic, we’ll spend about 20 minutes discussing writing prompts, followed by 20 minutes of quiet time writing together. Then we’ll share what we wrote with each other. Drop in for any of the sessions or join us for all three. An open mic hour will follow the writing sessions.
3:30-4:30: Money
Money can have both obvious and subtle influences on the way we live. What role did money play in your family? What have been your greatest successes with money? Your worst mistakes? What has money come to mean to you? Pass those lessons on!
4:45-5:45: Work
Our life’s work includes the activities that have occupied most of our time, energy, or concerns. It may include work outside or in the home. It may mean paying jobs or a lifetime of service in religion, community work, politics, or devotion to the arts. What has been the pattern of your work or career? What would you like others to know about finding their life’s work?
Dinner Break
6:15-7:15: Love
“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways,” wrote Elizabeth Barrett to Robert Browning. Yet how many of us take time to write about how we love—either for the one we love, or for the ones who will come after us to take their chances on the wheel of love’s fortunes? Pass on the lessons learned from your successes and failures in love.
7:30 Open Mic
Sign up on arrival to read on a first-come, first-served basis, and receive group feedback. Listeners welcome as well as readers.
Someone in the future is waiting to hear from you!

Wisconsin Film Festival Pop-Up: 600 Miles

Central Library, Meeting Room 302
09/29/2016
6:30 pm - 8:45 pm

In partnership with the Wisconsin Film Festival, the library is pleased to present a screening of 600 MILES. This film played to a near capacity Marquee theater audience at Union South during the 2016 Wisconsin Film Festival. It is being presented at Madison Central Library free of charge.

“Tim Roth gives a characteristically riveting performance as a federal agent tracking gunrunners along the Mexican border. Teenaged Anulfo buys weapons legally in Arizona and delivers them across the border to his narco uncle, unaware that he’s under surveillance by the ATF. When agent Hank Harris botches the arrest, he winds up a prisoner of his young target, bound in the back of an SUV deep in cartel territory. The danger only grows more volatile as they reach their destination. Dispensing with crime movie clichés in favor of a realist aesthetic ,600 Miles underlines hard truths about the ease with which America’s lax gun laws are circumvented. (2015|85mins)
-Mike King, Wisconsin Film Festival senior programmer

This film has been rated R by the MPAA.Children under 17 must be accompanied by an adult.

Theremin (documentary film) and presentation, featuring Geoff Brady

Theremin (documentary film) and presentation, featuring Geoff Brady

Hawthorne Library
09/30/2016
7:00 pm - 7:45 pm

1993 / USA / Documentary / 85 min
Very few people would recognize the name of Leon Theremin (1896-1993) if it weren't for the electronic musical instrument he invented around 1918. Fans of the first Star Trek series will recognize its sounds, but it was used in orchestral compositions and movies quite extensively for many decades, and even played a role in the Brian Wilson's composition of the Beach Boys' hit Good Vibrations. However, this documentary shows that the inventor of the forerunner instrument in electronic music is a person whose life had a lot more to offer than that. He was called "the Soviet Edison," and was honored by Lenin before he went to work in the United States, where he developed the first electronic security system in the world for Sing-Sing Prison in upstate New York. He also was a pioneer in interracial relations, braving the strong disapproval of his peers to marry a black ballerina. He was kidnapped from the U.S. in 1938 on the orders of the vengeful and ever-paranoid Stalin, brought back to the U.S.S.R., charged with treason, and was sentenced to a gulag (forced-labor camp). However, when World War II rolled around, he was brought back into the mainstream and was put to work for the KGB, for whom he invented the first electronic "bug" for eavesdropping, for which he earned the Stalin Prize.

Geoff Brady, principal thereminist for The Theramones, will demonstrate and discuss the theramin after the screening.
A native of Pontiac, MI, Brady plays drums (and occasionally theremin) with Yid Vicious and other Madison bands like the Active Percussion Duo, Madison Symphony Orchestra, the Gomers, Executive Tea Set, Yammer, and the Theramones. He also plays solo occasionally, writes a little, and teaches sometimes.
