Faith and Reason Series

 

Come join us this fall at Madison Public Library’s Central Branch for a series of talks by professors, clergy and authors on Faith and Reason. Derived from a UW-Madison physics course on science and religion, this series tackles the inter-relatedness of both disciplines, and promotes the need for doubt and skepticism in matters of both science and religion.

 

Mysticism versus Doctrine in the Levantine Religions and the East
Thursday, October 9, 7 - 8:30 p.m. - Central Library

Steven Fortney — Buddhist initiate in both the Tibetan tradition and Japanese Zen tradition. Initiated at Deer Park, WI by the Dalai Lama. Co-author with Marshall Onellion of Seeking Truth: Living with Doubt.

Thursday, October 23, 7 - 8:30 p.m. - Central Library

Professor Taner Edis — Physics professor at Truman State University in Missouri, and author of An Illusion of Harmony: Science and Religion in Islam.

Thursday, October 30, 7 - 8:30 p.m. - Central Library

Dr. Zulfiqar Ali Shah — Religious Director of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee. Originally from Pakistan, Dr. Shah has a Masters in Islamic Studies from the International Islamic University, Islamabad, Pakistan and a Ph. D. in Comparative Religions from University of Wales, UK.

The Role of Doubt in Religion and Science
Thursday, November 6, 7 - 8:30 p.m. - Central Library

Marshall Onellion — UW-Madison professor, currently teaching a physics course on science and religion, and co-author with Steven Fortney of Seeking Truth: Living with Doubt.

Islamic Medical Ethics
Thursday, November 13, 7 - 8:30 p.m. - Central Library

Dr. Mushir Hassan — Practices internal medicine in Brookfield and currently serves as the secretary for the Islamic Society of Milwaukee. Also a volunteer clinical assistant professor of medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin and advises medical students on caring for Muslim patients.

Faith Without Guilt: Judaism Is What We Do, Not What We Believe
Thursday, November 20, 7 - 8:30 p.m. - Central Library

Rabbi Jonathan Biatch — Rabbi Biatch has been the spiritual leader of Temple Beth El in Madison, Wisconsin since 2005. He has served on the boards of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice and "Allies," a human rights advocacy organization supporting gay and lesbian individuals.
