Update on the New Sequoya Branch Library

March 2008

The Sequoya Capital Campaign Committee will sponsor a series of author events in the spring of 2008 to benefit the new Sequoya Branch.

Patricia McConnellAdjunct Associate Professor in Zoology at UW-Madison, Patricia McConnell, PhD, will speak on Thursday, March 6 at 7 p.m. Dr. McConnell, in addition to teaching at the UW-Madison, owns Dog’s Best Friends, Ltd. She evaluates and treats serious behavioral problems in dogs, oversees science-based dog training classes, publishes books and videos and speaks around the world on training and treating dog and cat behavior problems. She is co-host of Calling All Pets on Wisconsin Public Radio, and the author of The Other End of the Leash.

James DeVitaActor and author James DeVita will speak on Sunday, March 30 from 1-3 pm. Mr. DeVita has performed lead roles, ranging from “Romeo and Juliet” to “A Moon for the Misbegotten,” at the American Players Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin as well as in many local productions. He is the author of two novels, Blue and The Silenced. Mr. Devita has also written more than 16 plays and adaptations of classics for young audiences for which he has won a number of awards.

Dean BakopoulosAuthor Dean Bakopoulos will speak on Thursday, April 3 at 7 p.m. Mr. Bakopoulos’ first novel, Please Don’t Come Back from the Moon, was selected by the New York Times as one of 100 Notable Books of 2005 and received “Book of the Year” awards from the New York Public Library, the Council of Wisconsin Writers, the Library of Michigan, and the Friends of American Writers. Recipient of a 2006-7 National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, he is at work on a second novel to be published by Harcourt in 2008. Mr. Bakopoulos was Director of the Wisconsin Humanities Council. He has recently accepted the position of Director/Writer-in-Residence for the Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts in Mineral Point, Wisconsin.

All three events will be held at the Sequoya Branch Library, 513 S. Midvale Blvd., Madison, Wisconsin, (608) 266-6385. Light refreshments will be served. There will be a special preview of the design of the new library at each event.

 

2007 Updates

In November, 2007, the Madison Public Library Foundation recently received a $200,000 grant award from the Madison Community Foundation for the Children’s Area at the new Sequoya Branch Library. [more]

Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporter and bestselling author David Maraniss discussed his work as a writer on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at the Sequoya Library.

Best selling author of historical fiction Margaret George will present “Where would Cleopatra have been without her Library of Alexandria? Queen or commoner, ancient or modern, the library has something for us all” on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at the Sequoya Library. See photos on Flickr.

Local author and UW Professor Emeritus Jerry Apps read from and discuss his new novel In a Pickle: A Family Farm Story on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at the Sequoya Library.

University of Wisconsin Professor of History Jeremi Suri will discuss his new book, Henry Kissinger and the American Century, on Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at the Sequoya Library.
